Feel like when African and Caribbean immigrants compare their culture to ADOS....they're really comparing the best parts of THEIR OWN culture to American 'hood culture which isn't that different from white redneck culture (substance abuse, babies out of wedlock, violence, lack of educational opportunity etc).

You rarely hear immigrants speaking on any kind of ADOS culture outside the hood.

Do they not have access to "regular" Black Americans? Churgoing working class or middle class folks, upper middle class Jack N Jill etc? We assume they should know better but maybe not.

No, they don't. Especially not Jamaicans. I've observed this with most Continentals and Diasporans like I've mentioned below. The ONLY group that appear to naturally have access to our higher socio-economic networks are Haitians. And I think it's because they have been living side-by-side with us here in America the longest. Essentially, if you go to any major city around the country with a sizeable black middle class and elite, there will be Haitians among their ranks.

Obviously, you will find exceptions with the other groups, of course, but it's not the norm.

I only see this tension among African immigrants and lower class African Americans which is to whom they are primarily exposed. And quite understandably will have a cultural clash.

African immigrants don't readily have access to middle/upper middle class african american networks when they come here which would in theory be their equivalent (if we take the assumption that immigrants are middle class) and who share the same values of ambition, family, high education.

From what I've seen, they either settle in cities around the black urban poor or they move to communities that are white or diverse but are non-factors to middle class blacks and have an absence of them altogether.

For instance, in my city, many African immigrants settle in Uptown or Rogers Park. Then they may move out to suburban places like Addison or Lombard. Well the historic black bourgeoisie lived on the opposite side of the city in Hyde Park - Kenwood, and if they ever moved out to the western suburbs, they move to places like Hinsdale or Glen Ellyn, places that have 'cachet'.

So they base their assumptions on those interactions either with the urban poor, or based off their non-interactions in diverse middle class communities that the black bourgeoisie wouldn't even live in. And then will say black Americans are lazy or don't work hard because they see our poor in the city and don't see us in the middle class neighborhoods that they live in when, the reality is, they live in places that the black bourgeoisie would typically look down upon so they are just operating in spaces outside of our circles.

Typically when they do meet their afram equivalents, either at HBCU's, Ivies, or in BGLO's, they have no problem mixing.

I've never had any issues culturally with my African friends. The higher you go up the afram totem pole, the more "cultural differences" becomes non-existent.
