Sampling in music happens all the time, it’s usually ASKED before it’s taken and used/flipped. He didn’t recreate the entire song and the only thing alike were a few chords in which he got their blessings for. Maxwell has literally done renditions of other people shyt as well, but he has a history of making his own classic shyt first.
Purple Rain was not the same fukking bridge over and over and a lot of nikkas have done this. Prince has also had others do this to his music as well... who’s out here sampling Jaquese shyt? This nikka is only known for doing covers and his only hit song is an “interpolation” aka copy of another nikkas shyt?
Edit: in fact, did you read the article? They didn’t even think it sounded like their shyt and was flattered he even called.
