Oh man, 4YEO is my least favorite Cole project to be honest. Outside of "Neighbours" and "Deja Vu" I don't go back to anything from that album. Maybe "Immortal" as well. Each to their own though.
The title track is probably Coles best track. Excellent album closer. I’ve grown to appreciate this album. It’s a good play front to back.

I think this is his best album.

I was listening to FHD yesterday and when I compared the two, I realized this one was better. FHD was great, but I don’t think it ends that well. The Off-Season keeps up the energy throughout the whole album, and there's not a single song on it I wouldn't listen to.

It’s not fair to look at it this way

when FHD came out it was at the end of the worse year for mainstream rap probably ever. It also was the album that everyone thought J Cole finally got it right, “No role models” is a true anthem

the off-season is seen as a return to form or Rather Cole listening to the critics and his fans and giving them what they want coming off of 2 lackluster efforts that were quickly forgotten by rap

I need to revisit the album now that it's so close to AOTY list time. At the time I felt it was def a top 5 release. Lot of stuff has come out since then so I'll be curious to revisit.

Absolutely. Definitely his best album.

It still holds up. Cole dropped a hell of an album and compared to his peers its better than Donda and CLB to me.

I actually agree with you. Listening to FHD, it feels like Cole elevated. People started taking him seriously after that and his next two albums sounded like he was chasing FHD. Even Cole said that was where he peaked and he slowed down a little bit after that. For a while, it seemed like he was never going to make another song like "Fire Squad" again.

I rank The Off-Season above it, but I'm not trying to diminish what FHD means in Cole's discography. It's still his most important album because his career changed after that.
