Not true. And I don’t get why people online keep saying this.

In '96, all of the Hip Hop magazines were going crazy for RD with the reviews. XXL and The Source loved it. By '97, everyone considered RD to be a classic. Back then, you didn't call something a "classic" the same day it dropped, like the weirdos do today. You let it cook. Even the non-Hip Hop spots like Pitchfork and Rolling Stone gave it near perfect scores. It's always been universally loved, by both the streets and mainstream media.

You couldn't go anywhere in NYC during that era without people quoting lines from the album, or hearing cars blasting tracks from it. The impact was crazy. Kendrick said when RD dropped, his crew couldn't stop playing the album. And when he was working on Section 80, he tweeted that he felt it was better than Illmatic. Wayne said he would study RD when it came out because he was trying to come up with a style for himself. Crazily impactful album. Not just for fans when it dropped, but also for future legend MC's.

I'm from the Midwest and nobody out here cared about Jay or "RD". :yeshrug:

In real time. I was 19 in 1996. I've posted my high school pics on here. If your experience was different, cool, but this definitely isn't some internet shyt.

I honestly can’t think of much released post 03 that compares. Personally, I’ll take TM101 over GRODT. IMHO TM101 has better replay value, and better production, and has more influence.

Maybe GKMC…

I don’t love GRODT as much as most on this site, I like several songs on the massacre more than anything on GRODT not named many men.

When you’re talking *all time great albums in hip hop*, whatever your discussing will inevitably be compared to the foundational pillars of the genre released 1988-1996/97.

It’s not absurd to say LAD is better than what I listed. I personally disagree, and I’ve always liked RTD much more than LAD, but you can probably guess that I prefer the 94-96 sound over all else.

Never seen N4L listed that high, especially above the chronic…but to each their own. I’ll give it a spin tmrw off the strength bc I haven’t heard it all the way thru in a few years.

Tm101 is a certified classic That album introduced up north nikkas to that trap shyt. You saw that snowman tee everywhere at one point.

And you actually like the massacre and that came around the same time as tm101 you like that era so you equate it to classics as well.

N4L was the most polished produced album ever. Crisp sound, dope rhymes. It was like a movie. Dre's best work ever.. Maybe the DOC album is better but not by much... IMO

I was in NYC for 8 months that year. And Outside It was Lauryn Hill , Fugees ,BIG and all his feature verses ,Pac , then when Nas dropped It was written and If I Ruled the world with Lauryn on the Hook it was over after that. Then Pac Passed Makavely album and then came all them Bootlegs :banderas: and so many other acts before you heard Jay.
Like ain't No nikka was getting some play late at night on the radio or on Ralph McDaniels show. I thought nice lil single and sample honestly thought the Alkaholics "only when im drunk" was better. Until my Brownsville people put me onto the album. It was dope.
1996 was just a Goated year. And im not going to go in on Jigga hopping on nas trend by putting foxxy on his first single, sampling Nas, having AZ in his video playing monopoly , yeah yeah they from brooklyn but :scusthov: .
