Wow. Salute to the great emcee J.Cole for dropping a certified GEM(Great Effort Musically….just made that up lol) with 2014 Forest Hills Drive. No promotion, no singles, and still selling 361,120 copies in his first week. WHAT?! I am immensely proud of that brother! This is the exact type of music black people need to be hearing right now. Loved the album, with “January 28th”, “A Tale of 2 Citiez”, “Fire Squad”, “St. Tropez”, “G.O.M.D”, and “Apparently” being the highlights for me.

This is by far the biggest leap he’s taken since he introduced himself to the world on a grand scale with The Warm Up. His flows have diversified, his production skills have matured with a greater degree of musical diversity, and his content has become less about complete introspection and reflection and is now balanced with poignant social commentary. This is definitely the best piece of work he has released up to his point, and for my money, it really isn't close. He is at the peak of his powers on some Professor Xavier pre-wheelchair type shyt. Dumbed down rap fans ask why Cole fans like him over Drake? Because Drake could never release an album like 2014 Forest Hills Drive. He lacks the depth.

Oh, how would I love for rappers releasing their album without promo and the need of dumbed down singles for mainstream to be littered throughout their work to become a trend. It seems more and more rap artists are realizing the power of the internet and feel they no longer need to be enslaved by the labels. The independents are out there doing their thing big time, and even labeled artists like Cole and Kendrick seem to have more freedom to just be honest and not chase the radio smash. And that’s a refreshing, because the soundtrack to the black experience should be reflective of what’s really going on in this world rather than evil fairytales that serve no purpose but to poison us.

With Igloo Australia, c00ni Garbaj, and plenty of other whack emcees dropping garbage, I was convinced that 2014 was the worst year of hip hop in a long time, but then Logic came through, Budden followed up KRIT fed us well, and now Cole brought it just as hard they did. Let’s see if Lupe and Joey Bada$$ can keep it going January 20th. Then the stage belongs to Wale, Drake, and Kendrick…..

PS: Did anyone else listen to all the credits at the end? “MY MOMMA…OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I LOVE YOU!” LMAO.

Logic – Under Pressure (5/5)
Joe Budden – Some Love Lost (3.5/5)
Big KRIT – Cadillactica (4.5/5)
J.Cole – 2014 Forest Hills Drive (5/5)
Lupe Fiasco – Tetsuo & Youth (???/???)
Joey Bada$$ - B4 DA $$(Before the Money) (???/???)
Wale – The Album About Nothing (???/???)
Kendrick Lamar – TBA (???/???)
Drake – TBA (???/???)

THIS!

I mean not to nitpick but why the hell would he put that on this album.

BTW, his Thank You's is more entertaining than some peoples whole albums.

Because, and J. Cole stated this, this album is a concept album about his life growing up and his experiences in reflection. Each song is sequenced to his upbringing experiences. That's why the 1st song is Jan 28th which is his birth day, Wet Dreamz is his early teens, '03 adolescence being his late teens and so forth...

I'm up to Role Modelz and this is pretty nice so far :ohhh:

This album is a real step up artistically for him...he's always had good technique but a bland sound. I may actually be able to put this shy into rotation for a while :ehh:

After having for minute and bumping it nonestop I will say bornsinner is better :yeshrug: both great albums to me
I wouldn't use the word great though, but then again, I sparely use that word. Very good effort, but ultimately I think it will be played out to me soon.
