Edgy hip hop heads will play it off as some sell out album or not grimy enough because it’s his most accessible album but Red did his thing on the album

Lyrics are still top notch and the production stands the test of the time

Damn shame people don’t celebrate this album more

he snapped on this shyt :damn:

Every dope hip hop album doesn't have to be a classic man

It's a solid 4 mic album and no amount of revisionism will change that. He had three before that. Most rappers would kill for that run

You right but at the same time, someone can think it's a classic and it wouldn't be a bad or far stretched opinion either.

I've seen people on here shyt on albums that are considered worldwide classics by most fans, now whether they trolling or not is another thing, but music is subjective.

i say all that to say, i just made this thread to get a discussion about the album going

Perfectly serviceable album but after 3 certified classics this one definitely felt underwhelming.. plus it wasn't nearly as grimy and dirty and the production was a little too "clean".. felt like he was chasing commercial success here. Malpractice was worse.

Redman was still spitting on a high level but Erick Sermon's production fell off a cliff after 1997 :manny:

(Though strangely, El Nino was still fire...so idk, maybe Erick just gave him a bad batch lmao)

Might be due to not being able to sample like he could in the past. A lot of the production on this album by Sermon is sparse and skeletal. A drum and a simple bassline a lot of times. It's not trash, but it's a far cry from Time for some Action.

Erick held it down for Doc'a Da Name tho.

i really think because Doc's Da Name is a more lighter version of Muddy Waters, people are sorta turned off by the album.

im the last guy to give a damn about how much an artist sells but it is ironic that this is the album that Red went platinum and most of his hardcore fans don't like that much :russ:

Erick wasn't really sampling like that in the 95/96 either and that was his peak as a producer...he had more of a Q-Tip/Dilla/Atlanta influence back then. If he was sampling, it was sparse jazz samples with a lot of surrounding music that you couldn't really trace. He just had a better vibe and sounds back then
