I know it’s moot now, cuz they converted, but can someone explain why it made sense for Clemson to go for 2 up 27-23?

Ohio State needed a TD regardless. If they got that TD, a subsequent FG for Clemson would win it whether they got the 2 or the extra point. If they failed on the 2, a FG just ties it and they have to go to OT.

Seems like an unnecessary risk, what am I missing here?

If no one else has already answered, I think it was to be down by only two just in case OSU scored and made the two-point conversion. Therefore, if they just got into field goal range, they could win instead of going to O.T.
