It wasn't, but Fields took too long to make that read so he broke it off.
People saying that's a touchdown if he doesn't break it off...really? It's not like the safety had been moved or anything. He was sitting on that post. And Fields took so long he assumed the play was broken and was making the read now to get open.

I know it’s moot now, cuz they converted, but can someone explain why it made sense for Clemson to go for 2 up 27-23?

Ohio State needed a TD regardless. If they got that TD, a subsequent FG for Clemson would win it whether they got the 2 or the extra point. If they failed on the 2, a FG just ties it and they have to go to OT.

Seems like an unnecessary risk, what am I missing here?
If OSU scores on the next drive they'd be up 29-28 not counting the extra point. Going for two ensures a OSU td results in a tie game & kickers can break under pressure

if they go for two...there is a (tiny) chance OSU possibly misses their XP in the event they get a TD. which would have the game tied

there was really only enough time for one possession realistically...so being up 4 is meaningless compared to 5...because if OSU scored they wouldnt get enough time to get into FG range anyway

Cause OSU still would have had to make an EP to win and that shyt aint a guarantee

it made perfect sense because you would rather be up 6 points instead of 4 or 5 .... Ohio State scoring a touchdown would tie it with 6 points, but they would still have to kick the extra point. (and in college, these kickers miss extra points almost on a game by game basis)
