I kind of feel like Eddie Murphy's characters were more "self aware" and less "zany", but I haven't seen Beverly Hills Cop in a long time so I might be wrong.

Yeah Eddie was basically a real life bugs bunny in his movies. He was the only one who could look at the camera and was in on the joke while everyone else was playing catch up

not saying he was average. just saying he made the same movie for most of his prime:hubie:

I agree with you its not a lot of comedians on that level anymore but that's a broad critique of the comedic landscape while also a sign of the times. comedy changes from decade to decade and a guy like Kevin Hart, who is funny in his own right, is just a different flavor than Chris or Eddie or Richard or Jerry or Lenny or Red, just like they were all different from one another even if they had similarities
Yeah every generation has there funny men but they aren't really carrying these flicks anymore. Harts biggest movies have the Rock as his constant sidekick or vice versa. shyt like that.

shyt, homie, NO ONE carries movies anymore. Comedies are more prevalent on streaming services because for the most part, audiences decided theaters are only for big movies. My friends with kids talk about this all the time. When they manage to get some free time and want to see a movie, its going to be a big blockbuster they feel is worth the time. feel like a comedy can be watched at home and just isn't worth the aggravation

I feel that's the real answer. Comedies work just as well on the small screen. Usually they won't benefit from being in a large format in a big auditorium.

That right there should be a topic for a thread. I never thought of how accurate that statement was. If it aint Marvel or some other big tent pole, you can forget about that movie being a success at teh box office.

depends. like horror, they're good in a community setting because emotion transfers. so if everyone else is laughing at something, you might laugh. same if everyone else screams, you might scream. The one part where I'm with you on that is in a comedy where its mad jokes per minute and everyone is laughing at one and you miss the following three

I think we've had that topic before or at least beat around the bush. but ultimately, thats what it is. movies are expensive, food at movies is more expensive, not every theater cares about the theatergoing experience so they don't have the best screens or the best sound, nor do they care if the people around you are being extra. plus you throw in gas and all the costs if you're paying for more than one person? Man, that adds up. its possible to blow almost $100 at the theater if its a family of four

I think it's always kind of been that way or at least since the 90s.
Were you gonna go see Forrest Gump or Shawshank Redemption in the theater??

I have kids and I am not sure that applies to me though. I will go see whatever looks dope enough to see in the theaters. The older I get the more I'd rather see a drama crime flick rather than a marvel or a fast and delirious. Comedy every now and then but comedies are hitting for me right now.

And to the broader point, horror is killing it in the theaters, comedy fused with big budget action/cgi is still a genre and popular. Buddy cop comedy is still a genre and works on the big screen because it's fused with action. Slap stick comedy also works in the theaters to a degree although I'm having trouble thinking of the last popular one.

TV in general is just offering better product in pretty much all areas and since we all stuck at the crib it's all we got.

I agree, I honeslty been going to back to the theater since there is a Movie Tavern close by that charges $5 tickets on Tuesdays, plus free complimentarty popcorn. The movie therater experience expensive as its ever been.

Well I was 8, so I wasn't going to see either of those in theaters:russ: But there also wasn't the option to just say "I'll wait" when VHS' were expensive as hell back then too.

Slap stick isn't in right now. last slap stick comedy to come out was probably Dumb and Dumber To. Quality notwithstanding, the audience just isn't there for that type of comedy anymore.

And you're right about TV. that's where a lot of innovative stuff is because studios are scared and don't know what to do. TV is cheaper and you can take more risks

Right I was just making the point people were still going to the blockbusters. Movie going was different but I recall saying things like I'll wait for video on that. shyt wasn't rare. Because video was a huge deal back then don't you remember all the rental shops? :russ:

Yeah of course but see I was 8 so there wasn’t the “I’ll wait to rent that” we all wanted to see what we wanted to see when we wanted to see it. So I can’t speak on what the adults were talking about or the bigger kids. But just from research of trends at that time, the movies that did best on home video were normally the movies that weren’t marketed well in their initial run or got a limited release Shawshank fell victim to both. Austin powers was in the same boat. Less “I’ll wait to see it on video” and more of “shyt I didn’t know this came out” and word of mouth
