It’s kind of funny that we consider JRPG’s role playing games

Cloud (and the rest of the party) still has an active time gauge command to actually initiate his stronger attacks, like all the FFs of old. Thus, a less direct controlled action to do select moves. All of Kratos actions are direct commands/actions, thus is one of multiple reasons why FFVIIR is still a RPG and GOW is an action game with rpg elements....Fool.

Kratos has an active rage meter that also builds up and gives him access to stronger attacks..

And you still aren’t doing any active “role playing” in either game. You are playing out a characters linear story in both. You go from point a to point b

You're not literally pausing the game to select his rage meter, breh. It's different.

  • You play a role and control a character(s)
  • You have an objective to do (Going from A->B, completing of a task): This takes the form of quests.
  • There's a system of self progression (you get stronger as the games goes on by stats, or levelups, etc)
If you have that, then you are fall under RPG.

most modern games do have 1-2 of these elements since RPGs elements are integrated most games. But there is a fundamental difference, action game (Ninja Gaiden/DMC) and Action RPGs (Sekiro/Witcher 3).

  • Stats are fixed
  • Even your skills are fixed, you are gaining access to stuffs that you originally had.
  • Games are scenario driven/level driven

It’s surface level stuff though. The progression system in say devil may cry and a game like witcher 3 are relatively the same. the only difference is you get the illusions of stat building in one. You see numbers in one and in the other the numbers in invisible. The progression system is still the same, which is why new game plus is so popular because the end result is you are much stronger than you were at the beginning of the game, only in one you dont have numbers showing you why.

It’s the same as hitting an enemy in one game and seeing it do -200 hp and hitting a character in another game and just seeing it’s life bar drain above its head. it’s still calculating numbers it’s just not a visual choice.

You are still playing out a role in a story inside of a game. It is simplistic, but it is technically role playing.

:stopitslime: Witcher 3 stats increases when you level. As you fight, you level and get stronger and you invest more in the skill tree. Gerald is also getting he didn't have originally. (W3 is a placeholder, I rather use YS)

As for DMC as you fight, you do not get stronger. you get more resources to get more skills. Dante is Dante, you are just more access to what makes him Dante.

There's a clear difference that's one of many. You can still have progression system without levels and uses resources, as long as, those resource to contribute to some sort of change of state. Then back to previous bullet points.

But with this said, the other bullet points are also important. DMC is still on scenario-based. Proper RPG doesn't do progression on a scenario basis.

I give up. :dead:

About what? You keep saying that every modern game has that overlooking that back in the day only RPGs had those systems. Most games took elements from RPGs to increase the immersion and depth to their games.

There is a reason why people who play RPGs are so passionate about them, there is no better genre of games.

Don't see any complaints on jrpgs npcs :hubie:

Or their stories, and the reason for that is because they always have a definitive beginning, middle, and end. Whether the story is good or not is another matter, but you'll never have a Mass Effect 3 situation in a JRPG.
