Its crazy how nikkas like Vince, Soul, Q, and Freddie Gibbs will drop some of the best albums in rap but barely sell anything

Kendrick is one of the best artists of the past decade or so

Q has a better discography in my opinion

Man, why you care what they sell… fukk with the music you fukk with.
Cause they're the last of a dying breed. If people don't buy their music, what's stopping them from calling it quits?

Cause dudes like vince make way more money from stuff outside of rap, I'm sure. Up and coming artists see that and likely the reason we don't see more trying to work in that lane.

The problem is really how commerce gets in the way of artistic expression. Look at Q for example. He dropped oxymoron and got his first financially successful record. His followup was seen as even better quality wise by many of us, but it sold worse cause it didn't have a crossover single like Studio on it. So he pivoted in a whole other direction to make music that would appeal to a wider audience with crash talk.

It didn't sell well either so he took a long hiatus until this year. Blue lips is a return to form and incredible album. But it's one of his worst selling, if not the lowest. It's just a concern of where they'll go from here :francis:

Cause id like to get more albums that build on each other thematically and quality wise but how can they balance that when it's not financially viable?

yeah it sucks when you hear rappers thats "smaller" making way better music than the guys thats getting the so called "machine push" or have the big popularity with the masses
but then you realize some of these guys nowadays can still make a good bit of money in other ways from rap avenues thats available
i would hate if some of the smaller folks i listen to quit making music because its not as profitable tho

So you care more about the character of a rapper over the music ?wtf :gucci:
I don't listen to, or at least try not to listen to, deviants out of principle.
Freddie Gibbs music gets posted in the booth. So if you only know about things outside of the music, that’s you choosing the gossip.
For me, I'm not up on what the latest things are music wise anymore, but I will say that from my perspective, the amount of people talking about gossip versus people talking about music has to be 70-30, and that's on platforms supposedly created to promote hip hop

Their music don't appeal to the mainstream. It don't seem like they chase hits.
That's true but they're some of the most popular rappers on the internet personality wise

You'd think they'd at least be going gold or a few hundred thousand

Rap music wasn't as popular as today during the 90s, but you had artists like gza and e40 going platinum. And they def weren't what you'd think of as mainstream music.
