this thread is like saying It's crazy how Steve Carell's career took off after The Office. If you're the leading character on a very popular show you can parlay that into being a star. That's not crazy at all.

Ted Danson
Cast of Friends
Jerry Seinfeld (tbf he doesn't like acting and doesn't have any range)
Ray Romano
Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller
Michael Chiklis
Matthew Fox
Every lead on Law and Order
and so on and on

It's very rare when leading actors in huge 7+ season TV shows become big movie stars. Unless you are known star, making a comeback, before coming into that role (Charlie Sheen, William Shatner, Michael Sheen) people can unsee you as that character most of the time. It's very seldom they get a leading TV show role again. That's why many people didn't start watch Breaking Bad becaust it's Malcolm's dad in a drama but that's turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I'm 100% convinced Breaking Bad would not have been so huge had Cranston not been in Malcolm in the Middle as goofy dad.

is Cranston a big movie star? Granted his career is better than it was now but outside of Godzilla which I heard he was barely even in what huge movies has he done? Cranston is on the higher side of success stories of people coming off big shows but many of those other people you listed are much further removed from their shows than he is and in the aftermath of their shows they got a bit more work too.

Nah, I wouldn't call him a movie star and I highly doubt he'll ever be. He'll be a bad guy in big movies every 2-3 years and star in smaller films like Trumbo and The Infiltrator for the next decade.

I think in terms of guys coming off huge shows he clearly has more acting ability than most of them. Many of these huge shows are sitcoms and don't require all that much acting. Cranston has enough ability to keep him relevant and likely has far more acting range.

Even his peer Aaron Paul got a few roles but can Paul even really play a character other than some version of the same core personality of Jesse?

:dahell: Ted Danson was a big star in the late 80s to mid 90s.

Ted Danson is and was more famous than Bryan Cranston
Friends was an ensemble
Ray Romano could never be a big movie star with his schtick
No one cared about the stars of Prison Break at any point
The Shield was not a big show no matter what you think, and Chiklis still got big roles
Lost was an ensemble
Law and Order has 68 lead actors across 34 shows

What about Tim Allen? he was huge

Bryan Cranston has an Academy Award nomination, ran TV, and is still not a "big" star. There are like 10-20 "big a-list" stars on the planet, and that's across every entertainment platform. I'm talking movies, TV, music, etc. Huge stars don't exist anymore, and half of them are grandfathered in.

Yeah his premise is flawed especially with that list where a lot of those guys were super successful off those shows and have the ability to pick and choose projects as they became rich . Or had previous success . And as great as Cranston is comparing his success to Seinfeld??? Really ?! His money so long off one show he never had to do anything ever again in his life

exactly. Tony shaloub won a million awards for monk and got so much acclaim all that did was keep him as a working actor. I love that Bryan Cranston embraced the love he got from the show and the success he's getting instead of being like I'm more than Heisenberg !! Don't ask me about breaking bad etc

Ray Romano still has the Ice Age film series though.

Is everybody in this thread on angel dust? :russ:

I'm not saying the people I named weren't big names. I'm saying lead actors in the most popular TV shows rarely break through to movies as big stars because they become stuck to their character in people minds.

This is a known thing.

The storyline was so well written I beg to differ
