"if i ruled the world" was aiird. i couldnt get into it like that, seeing how the three songs that it spun off from were all better:
AZ - sugar hill
kurtis blow - if i ruled the world
whodini - friends
so no, i couldnt get into the Nas version.

When it dropped it was definitely a letdown after Illmatic but If I Ruled The World was a bonafide smash hit. Purists were upset he went with Trackmasters for a decent amount of production and didn’t go back to Pete Rock or Lord Finesse for production. At least he did have Preemo & L.E.S back on the boards plus he did have Havoc production. It was a really good album that was a step in another direction from Illmatic so many fans were turned off but still great album.

Such a letdown that Jay Z switched his whole style up the next year.
