Man as a loyal Chargers fan, I'm relieved to see both Norv and AJ gone.
The blame is split evenly. The thing is that AJ isn't the draft talent he thinks he is. Dude was drafting prospects who are considered 6th rounders in the 2nd round because, "he was a second rounder to him" just so he could inflate his ego and be looked at as some scouting genius by the media. Of course he was proven wrong. Some of the Chargers struggles have been due to the fact that he never drafted for depth and gave Norv weak pieces to use.
When it comes to Norv, it was an issue of adjustments. How many times this season have you seen the Chargers going into halftime with a lead, sometimes a substantial one, and then lost the game? That blame goes mainly to Norv. When the pass rush continually gets to Rivers in 2 sec, why continue to call 5-7 steps drop step passes? Rarely were quick slants called when there was consistent pressure. Also the amount of times dude abandoned the run was just awful. I remember the vs the New Orleans Saints Mathews was averaging 9 yards per carry and Norv nearly completely neglected the run in the 4th quarter.
Stats from the past can also be inflated by weak competition. The AFC West division other than the Chargers was weak for many of the years the Chargers were on top, and the teams outside of the division were hardly contenders.
Rant off.
