yes. trying to get to cyber from working for the government (non it admin) for 3 years.

The fastest way into cyber-security/infosec is the Identity and Access Management route (IAM). Once you've got your 1st security role, you can keep going down the IAM path or explore other security tracks that may interest you more.

basically you need the following to start:

1.) Security + certification
2.) Skills in Active Directory - Domain Services, Federation Services, and Azure Active Directory,
3.) get your 1st IT Job, before or after you get a cert if you can. It doesnt have to be pure helpdesk (In some cases alot of phone work), it can be Desktop Support (hands-on), or Asset Management, Just get any job you can while you skill up, so that by your 2nd job opp comes along you can have your pick.

Get you a Udemy.com account and buy a couple of courses on Active Directory, Most will show you how to set up your virtual lab environment so you can follow along easier.

Dont be spooked by the $200 courses, They'll drop down to anywhere between 8.99 and 12.99 and a few days

Infact, tonight they are having a sale for as low as $9.99

Please jump up that now and dont put it off

Right now tons of companies are giving away tons of free training classes. I wouldn't spend money on any course material until all the free stuff has been exhausted. I've signed up for enough free training classes to last me until the end of the year and beyond.

You can get access to Microsoft Azure training free until 2025.

Rejection email after rejection email. Trying to stay motivated, but man...

I’m getting my cv reviewed again, hopefully someone will give me a shot
I've been in the field since 2008 and I still gets tons of rejections even now. But each job that I don't get I make sure to document some lessons learned. And I apply for jobs even when I don't plan on actually taking them. That way I know whether my current employer is lowballing me or not. Without these rejections I wouldn't know what I was doing right or wrong. I even check LinkedIn to find out who got the job over me and look at their qualifications so I can copy them.

You have to look at these rejections as a positive because you now have more information than before. Even the Recruiters are shocked when the rejections don't phase me and I almost seem giddy. Because these fools have given me their entire playbook for hiring candidates at their organization. I especially love it when they give me some kind of technical test to take. Because I can now study that information look up the answers and now impress the next hiring manager.

Remember this all a numbers game and all you have to do is be better prepared than the other candidates. Looking at the market as it is now I would concentrate on cloud technology only. Most of the companies now are gonna start moving more workloads to cloud vendors due to this pandemic. I just posted some free Azure training that lasts until 2025 so I would just learn as much as I can because companies will eventually start hiring again. Now is just a bad time so most are only hiring contractors with tons of niche experience. I've gotten more rejections in the last 3 months than I got the last 3 years. That just tells me I need to retool and switch gears into different areas because the market is changing.

Even with a sec+? I’m trying to get a job to get a visa out of this country tbh

most likely yes. You might luck up, but if you dont have any IT exp. jobs will skip over you tbh. Youre gonna get low balled too with salary.

if you wanna do govt IT or govt cyber you should just try to get a help desk job with a contractor with openings for govt agencies. Thats the easiest way to get a security clearance too.

Like all of govt cyber jobs require a sec+ and a security clearance :russ:.

Get a job with a govt contractor. Leave for another job once you got your certs amd clearance, start applying to cyber positions
