If you have the A+ cert that could be a bargaining chip for a $2-3 bump for entry level. But it'd top out at about $14.

After that you just gotta grind it out to get to lvl2/lvl3 techs and eventually move into that admin role.

:what: Do you have a bachelors degree?

I'm a mech engineer, been workin for a good 6 years, making damn near 70K/yr

I wanna switch but entry level in my field is like... 50K. So dropping to 25-30K for a few years..... whew. The ceiling in IT is a lot higher though, thats the thing.

@sheagree respect. I live in the south and most entry level helpdesk position will start around $16 hourly. Originally, I graduated with a management degree then went back for a year to get the IS.

Definitely a good field where demand is high. Just takes some work & networking (social) to move up

All the IT directors at my job have been there for at least 15+ years.....You not making IT director outright unless it's some small company( like 5 people type small ), you have to start @ the bottom like the rest of us...lol

Certs is one thing, but getting the experience is the hardest part. I was @ the helpdesk for 5 yrs:snoop: . It wasn't until I stopped being scared to put myself out there and start talking to other depts is when I finally got my chance.

You said CCNP. You are a professional like an Architect or Lawyer - act like one. I know CCNP's - they don't ask any damn questions, they know everything, and if they have a question they are professionals and go find it themselves. School me on how much an American would make.

I don't know bruh that's why I'm asking. In America I would get 70K plus in Canada 50K meh. I haven't monitored the market I want out though I'm done with I.T.

Degree, A+ and Net+.

But I live in the Detroit area and the job market is awful. But you probably haven't graduated in the last couple years, or you'd realize how bad it was breh. :sadbron:

There were people with Master's Degrees applying for my job (true story).

You should stay in health care if your smart. Technology jobs aren't really stable careers like other professions. Most companies these days bring in IT contractors to do all the heavy lifting. So if you don't gain experience in some really HOT technology your earning potential and job security will be severely limited. The IT job market gets hot and cold and some years they'll be tons of jobs and others nothing. And during any economic downturn IT people are the first to get the boot because management considers them to be an cost center.

I gotta agree, I love computers but if I could do everything over I would've majored in Medical Tech instead. :to:
