Is it possible to do desktop support part time/nights?

I am making decent $$$ right now in engineering but the field I went into is limited. Thinking about making that switch brehs. Lookin to do that network admin thing. I dont have any experience beyond setting up a real basic network in my apartment. But I don't want to start 100% from the bottom, because I am trying to start a family + settle down and shyt in the next year or two.

I know a few dudes who started in that desk job realm and made the leap from there. Have a few friends + family in that world too. But I guess my question is, whats the best way for a grown dude to make the switch?

You won't get into any server room without 2/3 years of help desk experience and the required certs breh. Getting your A+ and Microsoft certs will get you in at a helpdesk position and you can slowly go from there, people are always looking for more tech support guys and will help you make that next step because it is beneficial for them as well.

Been in the IT game for a couple of years but I just cant get that break lol. Graduated with an IS degree in 2010 and been stuck at the helpdesk since then smh :wtb: I mean I'm eating well for my position but there's really no moving up at this company as my co-workers have been here for 5-10 years :upsetfavre:

Thing about IT is that you'll only eat as much as you're willing to sacrifice and learn. Also, the people in this field arent trying to teach you sh*t or advance your career so learn as much as possible when you get on the job and sometimes u gotta smack some kuffis and get results :ahh:

Same as you, been stuck on the helpdesk since 2009. :sadbron:

It sucks working at a company w/no room for advancement. Nothing I can do but cop certs and keep applying for other jobs...

Do those positions really only pay $10/hr though? Thats like a 2/3 pay cut for me. Thats the biggest issue...

No idea bruh I get paid 50K up here in Canada.

You said CCNP. You are a professional like an Architect or Lawyer - act like one. I know CCNP's - they don't ask any damn questions, they know everything, and if they have a question they are professionals and go find it themselves. School me on how much an American would make.

If you have the A+ cert that could be a bargaining chip for a $2-3 bump for entry level. But it'd top out at about $14.

After that you just gotta grind it out to get to lvl2/lvl3 techs and eventually move into that admin role.
