Do I need to know how to code if I want to work a help desk job?

I would say 90% of the people who work @ a help desk don't know how to code. But if you want to learn how to stand out from everybody @ the help desk learn to write scripts. I receive 2 promotions just off my ability to write scripts.

Imagine telling a supevisor/manager, "Hey this process takes 40 minutes to complete and a person has to do it manually , well I can write a program to get this process down to 5 - 10 minutes with little manual intervention." This saves them alot of $$$$$$$$$$$

They will love you....:russ:

I'd go with what Data-Hawk says. But if you could upgrade your skillset to working as close to data as possible, you'll be in good shape. Doing sql scripts is def. an easy way to go. After that, you'd want to make sure you learn the common practices of database architecture and design as well as stored procedures.

There is a humungous market on the technical side of Data Analytics. And the amount of different industries that need it is amazing. I would say, if you know how to code and have a business degree, it shouldn't be to hard to understand Data Analytics/ Business Intelligence.

I would say "NO" to the debt, but what dept are you looking into moving too? I would say the best way to get out of the Help Desk is finding ways to stick out so you can work with other teams and certs.

Back when I was @ the help desk, I use to email other teams all the time to get a better idea of the skillsets they were looking for etc.

Well my concentration was Networking & Security MGMT. I remember subnetting, OSI, Active Directory, TCP/IP but thats really it.

What scripting language do you IT cats use?

I'm just curious.

I use bash....

The shytest programming language out there but it does the job and very easy to learn since there a lot of tutorials free on the internet...

Everything you want to do in bash scripting....someone has already done. Just steal their script, customize it for your environment and watch your company think you are a genius....:russ:

this for that big At&t us courts project right? I see that listing from a different recruiter almost every damn day. Is it just growing like crazy or not enough qualified people out there? Is the field engineer one or the NOC? I interviewed for the NOC team but when they told me I'd have to be on-site in Reston everyday, coming from DC I was like :scusthov:

Yes.....

I work for them as a part-time consultant since I have a full time gig.
Tough to find voice engineers out here breh. The ones with little experience are eating good. :ohlawd:

Right now I'm looking for some low level tech to train on the job and wash my hands. Only time I want to be called when sh!t is broken

How much did they want to pay you?
