The United States has spent at least $22.76 billion on supporting Israel over the past year, according to the Costs of War project at Brown University. This amount includes military aid and related operations in the Middle East, such as battling Iranian-backed Houthi militants in the Red Sea. This is the highest level of annual aid provided to Israel since direct U.S. aid to the nation began in 1959.

The United States has committed more than $6.5 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since 2014, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. This includes a range of military equipment and training to help Ukraine defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. However, please note that these figures can change as new aid packages are announced or approved.

The largest expenditures contributing to the U.S. deficit in 2024 are:

  1. Social Security: With an aging population, Social Security outlays have consistently been one of the largest expenditures. In 2024, the CBO estimates that the federal government will spend around $1.3 trillion on Social Security benefits.
  2. Healthcare Programs: Medicare, Medicaid, and other healthcare-related expenditures are also significant contributors to the deficit. In 2024, the federal government is expected to spend approximately $1.2 trillion on these programs.
  3. Net Interest on the Debt: The U.S. government pays interest on the debt it has accumulated over the years. In 2024, the CBO estimates that the federal government will spend around $450 billion on net interest, a number that has been rising due to increasing debt levels and higher interest rates.
  4. Income Security Programs: This category includes various safety net programs such as food assistance and unemployment benefits. In 2024, the federal government is expected to spend around $400 billion on these programs.

Ukraine would be over if they were allowed to take the oilfields :mjpls:

But that won't make any money for the arms contractors

I know it's not an issue for you, but the rest of us prefer to discuss politics within a framework of reality. The US government has not gone $2 trillion into debt on Israel/Ukraine this last year (not even 1/20th of that), and the article he linked in the OP made no such claim.

As obsessed as you are about me, you'd think you would actually read my posts. I oppose the war in Israel, oppose the war in Ukraine, oppose Biden's foreign policy in general, AND I'm for dramatically lower defense spending. But I can have those positions and still live in the real world where the USA hasn't gone even $100 billion into debt over Israel/Ukraine over the last year, much less $2 trillion.

Defense budget is as large as it is because of wars like Ukraine and Israel. But they want to support The Machine. :picard:

Defense budget is as large as it is because we supposedly are designed to fight two major wars at once. In reality, that's mostly an excuse so defense contractors can make large profits. But wars in Israel and Ukraine aren't the cause of that spending, it's more that they're the result. The USA supports wars in Isarel and Ukraine in part because defense lobbyists want to make even more money.
