No one is hyping up Marcus Smart. He is what he is. A very good defender, can play both guard positions and sometimes the 3, can create for others, and is a terrible shooter. But people want to make this a Marcus vs Avery deal. Avery is what he is also. A very good defender who is undersized, can play one position, is a good shooter, can't create his own shot consistently, can't play pg, and can't stay healthy. To me they are BOTH backup players in this league. It's just that one is going to demand a shyt ton of money (Bradley) that will limit our ability to sign a quality big man, and another one could be had for much cheaper and play more than one position. Marcus needs to play within himself and know his role. Play good d, get others involved, stop shooting 3 pointers, drive to the bucket or post up more, take mid range jumpers when guys get double teamed. He could be the ultimate glue guy, but sometimes he takes too many fukken shots.
I am glad we are ahead of schedule in the rebuilding process, but we are still flawed and are not championship contenders unless the stars align perfectly. We are desperate for interior defense and rebounding. We are not one player away, but maybe 2. My dream scenario would be getting Fultz, a guy who can score in every way, and can create for others. Have Jaylen improve and mature so he can play more minutes. And sign or trade for a quality big who can rebound and block shots. We need at least one more guy who can create his own shot without completely gutting our team in a trade. Getting that first pick would be ideal but it's no guarantee.
I know Horford gets flack for not being a great rebounder, but fukk it I like him on our team. He does the little things to help a team. We need an enforcer next to him too compliment his game. Some will say we overpaid for him, but we have to overpay for players. We don't have the luxury of being in LA, Florida, or Texas. Top free agents don't sign with us. Al is the first player who is still in his prime sign with us. In the past we've gotten guys way past their prime (Dominique, Payton, Shaq, etc.).
