yo when you mentioned david lynch.. I KNEW THE EXACT SCENE you were talking about even before the video pic loaed..defly one of the scariest scenes from a non horror movie

OP, that's a great choice. Hard to argue against that really...it's probably the greatest jump scare ever.

If we are talking strictly building up tension, another scene that deserves kudos is the blood sample scene from The Thing :



Carpenter is likely the most underrated American director ever because he mostly did straight horror. But cot damn did this dude know how to write a scene. You KNOW that at least one of them test is fukked but you've no choice but to anxiously wait and find out which one.

That Asian horror run from the early 00's also had some gems.

Ju-On (Remade as The Grudge in the US) was fukking horrifying, especially to a dude that was just getting into Jap horror and wasn't as accustomed to their style.
