Is there an R&B artist that has come out in the last 20 (35) years that is more gifted than R. Kelly???

Within the same time frame? The names that I immediately think of are Aretha, Roberta Flack, Mariah & Alicia Keys. My personal favorites would be Jill Scott & India Arie, but I’m not sure if they wrote most of their songs anyway. From what I know, none of the women listed have wrote much for other artists either. So I don’t know. School me.
I was hoping u would school me lol

But from a quick glance I think Jill Scott and Alicia Keyes did write or co-write most of their own stuff

And:salute:for not mentioning Beyonce

The Land That Time Forgot
If we maintain that R&B, as we know it, dates back to Louis Jordan in the 1940s, that
gives us almost 80 years of a library for the genre.

Out of those 80s years, its safe to say that the last twenty years has marked the creative and commercial
decline of R&B.

So Robert Kelly is without question, the last stellar, mega-prolific, multi-threat R&B/soul artist, similar in impact to Jordan, Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Rick James, Prince, Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Babyface.

But R. Kelly has had little competition for two decades, since he has presided over the ashes of a once-magnificent form of expression.

Bey is the Cardi B of song writing. LOL. Anywho...I found two more female song writers. Missy, (Ashford) & Valerie Simpson.

You’re right. Mary has written some hits. And I forgot about Faith.

From what I understand, LA Reid was the business and Babyface was the writer.

Naw...LA was the beats (and some writing), and Face was the lyrics.

You can see the difference when Babyface went solo and started producing his chit and was kicking them snoozers.

My vote would be for Babyface, Brian McKnight & y’all ain’t putting nearly enough respect on Raphael Saadiq’s name.

While I agree...they predate the time frame of this convo.

However, Kells is still, at minimum, top 10 because he’s crossed so many styles. Literally, the same man that wrote 12 Play also wrote I Believe I Can Fly, MJ’s You Are Not Alone, Maxwell’s Fortunate, When a Woman Loves & K Ci/JoJo’s Life. Then he reintroduced Ron Isley & Charlie Wilson to a younger crowd. Who does that?

:mindblown:

Agree.

And I mean, this ain't even talking about:
Changing Faces' "Stroke You Up", "Foolin' Around"
Men At Large "Let's Talk About It"
Blaque "808"
Toni Braxton "I Don't Want To"
Chante Moore "Bitter"
Hi-Five "Quality Time"
ATL "Calling All Girls"

I extended the time frame to 35 years

When you count his catalog, collaborations, writing? I'm not even a big RK fan and I don't see anybody touching the volume and quality he put out

When year was that? Because Babyface was still making some good songs (not as consistent though) in the early 2000s (ex. The Loneliness & What If).

But you do still have a point. I did notice a shift in both Brian McKnight & Babyface’s artistry after they separated from their 1st wives.

:russ: At beyonce, the weekend or fukking chris brown, we talking about constantly making hits for himself and a bunch of other people since the late 80s not some little 3 year run with 3-4 hit singles. Nobody touches robert besides his new cellmates next year. He‘s a legend
