Exactly, what makes the House Party trilogy so poignant amongst the Hip Hop community wasn't just the fact that it starred two rappers, it was the realness and believability of the character arcs the two went through. Both Kid and Play were basically your basic teens with good intentions who had to grow and mature. Kid's Vices were that he thought his Charm and sense of humor could get him through any sticky situation. He had to learn the hard way about antagonizing Full Force and making fun of them at the party while his boys were around, but when he was by himself and they was whopping that ass all night that " charm" got him nowhere. It came full circle in House Party 2 when he was forced into a situation by professor Sinclaire where he either had to show his intellect or fail.
Play's vices were arrogance and p*ssy. If you look throughout the films Play major troubles all involved chasing females. He was too distracted by the good looking girl in his car to take Bilal with him, he was trying to impress Sherane which caused the battle with Kid, which he lost and had to be humbled. He was distracted by Sheila Landrew ( Aka Sharnell Butler. Aka Charisse Taylor) enough to make a DUMB decision regarding Kid's scholarship check, which caused a rift between him and Kid. All of this comes full circle by the end of House Party 2 when he comes to realize exactly what his friendship with Kid means to him and he makes amends by selling his most prized possession (his car) in order for Kid to continue attending college.
By part 3 both of them were mature enough within their friendship to treat each other as equals. Play was still the nikka getting p*ssy and Kid was still the dude in a monogamous relationship about to get married but they were in business together both hustling to get their management firm off the ground. That conversation they had in the car where Kid is lamenting the fact that he feels like he's aging without accomplishing anything and Play tells him that if the company doesn't work out he'd get a haircut with him and buy matching ties was the shyt real nikkas go through together.
