Agreed. You don't have to love it. But not like it at all? And furthermore, think it's terrible? :what: shyt makes no sense. If a rapper is heavily influenced by something, that influence is going to be all over his/her work. So how can you claim to love that rapper when you hate his/her major influences?

Agreed. Though I find them suspect too, not gonna lie. Kung fu and hip hop have a marriage that goes way back.

I can excuse the kung fu thing. They have a less immediate influence on hip hop (especially 'gangsta rap') than Scarface. Scarface is something else entirely. The impact on Black and Hispanic inner-city youth was immediate once that movie came out.

My post was aimed at people who think the movie is terrible. Nothing is untouchable, and Scarface is definitely not untouchable. But terrible? I stand by the fact that if you think Scarface is terrible, there's no way you're a Mobb Deep, Nas, Wu-tang, Jay-Z, etc fan like you claim to be. Scarface is all over their music.

And I disagree. Something can have influence but still be terrible. And I think it’s easy to love a rapper but not like something that influenced them. There are aspects of Scarface that work for me and a lot more that don’t. That shyt influenced brad Jordan a lot. Doesn’t mean it has to influence me a lot or I have the same love for it that he did. For them it’s all about the rags to riches thing. I get it. But for me I’m looking at it as a film and there’s a lot of it that’s just meh to me. Again something can have a great influence and have that influence be respected but it doesn’t mean I have to like it. There are so many movies that have influenced other movies and other directors but it doesn’t mean I have to love those movies.

I’m sure there are people who love Indiana Jones and Star Wars who have no love for Flash Gordon or other Saturday matinee serials. None whatsoever. And those movies have influenced so much of what film has become since Lucas and Spielberg took the game over. And I don’t see that as wrong if someone were to look at an old Flash Gordon serial and say it’s terrible. Or look at it came from outer space and say it’s terrible etc etc. This shyt isn’t in a vacuum for me and I’m sure others feel the same way.

We're not talking about "oh meh, that film was OK. I love parts of it but there are parts I don't care for" You're saying, "Scarface is a terrible film in all respects but I'm still a hip hop fan who listens to Mobb Deep, Wu-tang, Nas, Jay-Z (the pinnacle of this genre) all the time." Like cmon, who are you trying to fool :mjlol:

Honestly, I don't know much about what you're saying. I never cared for Indiana Jones, Star Wars is kinda meh to me (I love some parts, and others I don't care for) and I've never watched Flash Gordon in my life.

Artists don't exist in a vacuum. If you think an artist's major influence is terrible (not meh, not decent, but TERRIBLE), chances are you're not a fan of that artist like that. Why pretend otherwise?

Simple answer to the last question: because artists are influenced by more than one thing. If someone loves wu but doesn’t love kung fu movies or thinks something like shaolin vs wu tang is awful, that’s okay. They may like Scarface or may like sonny Carson or may like comic books. Or they just may like the other artists before wu who influenced wu. Liking that thing that influences an artist just enhances the listen. It’s not necessary. You can love wu and not be into comic books. It’s possible. And yes if you think that one thing that influences them is terrible that’s okay because they were influenced by other things.

You think it’s laughable but I don’t at all. The shyt makes perfect sense to me for someone to say Scarface is terrible but love jay or Nas or Face. I know the reasons they loved it and they were influenced by it. shyt Nas also loves alien 3 and is influenced by it. I love Nas but I’ll be damned if I sit here and speak up for alien 3 and laude it as this dope piece of art. But if it helped that man create something dope that I loved then I give it props for that.

That's a given. But again, Scarface is not Alien 3 in influence and false equivalency is disingenuous. A noticeable part of Nas's entire rap persona, references, things he's rhymed on.... is all Scarface. From "NY State of Mind", to "The World Is Yours" to "The Message" to "It's Mine." (And I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting). So when you hear those songs, you just go "great song, but Scarface is shyt." :dwillhuh: It's not even like the Scarface influence is subtle - it's in your face. Across the entire genre of this rap shyt.

And I'll keep it a 1000 - if you love Wu but think the kung fu genre is terrible (not "meh", not "some are good", but terrible), you're not a Wu fan like that and you should stop pretending. Everything about how Wu is structured to their music is one long kung fu movie. LOL at pretending you love Wu-tang and expecting me to believe you when you think the entire genre is terrible.

I think this is a good place to end the convo. I respect that you've been civil in your responses. :salute:

Yeah I just disagree man. I don’t see it that way. I don’t believe in being so draconian with shyt. But you do and I feel it. I just can’t reach it. Props

Not even a top 5 gangsta flick so no its not top 10 all time movie. Its a solid b+/a- tho. Calling it terrible is just a bad opinion. Its a dope flick.

Now if were talking influence and replayability... its up there but technically theres way better movies than it.

I put scarface in same category as films like say... the terminator. Cult classic. Genre defining but best film ever status? Cant do that
