Bringing up GoT is foolish
The era of big shows that everyone is talking about at the same time is over:mjcry:
GoT was the last one

Nah, whatever hour long drama HBO premieres in the fall will capture everyone's attention again.

The "formula" for creating a show that everyone talks about really isn't too complicated.

1: make sure the show is REALLY good.

2: dripfeed the content.

3: give it room to breath

The real difference between HBO and Netflix is really just volume. HBO essentially dedicates a fell 10-12 weeks to whatever their main Sunday show is at the time, and doesn't run anything else that fills that same lane until that show is over.

Netflix drops a full 10-13 episodes on you all at once, which automatically fukks up the everybody talks about it angle since not everyone is going to watch the episodes at the same pace. Then, they usually have another show or movie they hit you over the head with a week or two later based on you having watched the show from a couple weeks before. As a result, people forget about these shows quick.

i'm not a fan of netflix but the article is reaching if they think netflix will die because of another streaming service. it's gonna take an accumulation of garbage content while raising prices, which could possibly happen since their original shows are generally not good. they have a very low batting average for me but ppl seem to like their original stuff as seen in this thread so they'll be alright.

Watchmen
Westworld Season 3
Deadwood Movie
Barry Season 3
Insecure Season 4
Lovecraft Country :ohhh:
Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 10
The Deuce Season 3
Silicon Valley Season 6
The Righteous Gemstones

Yeah we're good :ohlawd:

don't sleep on succession. love that show.

HBO is the MJ of shows. all that has to be said.

what show is this? they don't have any other shows that capture everyone's attention, this was it. they specifically picked up and gave westworld the budget to be that show and it hasn't delivered.

HBO does still have good content, but it's more for specific audiences, nothing that pulls everyone together. but that might be a good thing, keep a whole bunch of people addicted to shyt that airs at different times so you keep them subscribed vs. the people who used to subscribe just for GOT

I don't watch either of them, but Big Little Lies and Succession perform pretty well, and people don't shut up about either of them.

They got Westworld next year.

Watchmen is probably going to take off since now is the perfect time for that type of story.

Hell, True Detective was huge earlier this year.

They have heavy hitters, and at least one or two of those will actually benefit from Game of Thrones being gone. Not all of that audience is going to stick with another HBO show, but a good enough portion will.

Those aren't the water cooler type of shows that Game of Thrones was though. Westworld has a huge fanbase, but confused the fukk out of fans to the point where it was not enjoyable in S2. I have faith that Westworld will pick up where they fell short in S3, but as of right now it's a question mark.

True Detective had an amazing comeback after S2. I still think it went out like a wet fart near the end, but man does Mahershala have them Emmys on stand-by or what...

“Make sure the show is REALLY good"
you act like that’s easy
They said West World was up next
But people down right hate West World
I watch it but it’s nowhere near GoT in terms of water cooler, social media, etc

Those are all good shows/do well, but won’t fill the gap of GOT. But that’s what I was saying, they have a lot of shows that can keep people subscribes year round vs just being there for the huge spectacle show for 8-10 weeks then bouncing

I know, that was an oversimplification like a motherfukker.

But you see what I was getting at.

For the record, I think Westworld has the potential to be be the show that fills the Game of Thrones hole, but the second season was a bit much for most people. Maybe season three will still maintain the quality without having to dedicate so much if its content to supporting plot twists.

it is and isn't...it's their biggest presently, but it still doesn't feel as big as HOC and OINTB were - likely to those being the first successful forays into OG content....either way, it suffers from my third point of how the full season drop makes things forgettable. there's like a 2 week window in which to watch netflix stuff and participate in the pandemonium, then it's over.
And you have to watch it like this or fall victim to spoilers. shyt sucks.

Netflix had a good run but the future belongs to Disney, I wouldn't be surprised to see Netflix get bought out by another company

I'm waiting for the day Disney starts streaming sports.

No way Disney does same day release for its movies. That would kill the movie industry and hurt Disney in the process.

Yes they can and they will, it's time for a new way to show movies, I see this being the new normal in 15 years time

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven
Netflix has been planning for these kind of events since the moment they went live with their streaming service. It's the exact reason they're throwing so much money at their own content. People won't sign up to 5 different streaming services so eventually it'll come full circle where the less popular studios who are trying to launch their own platforms will close and again licence their content to the biggest paying streaming services. Netflix is hoping to be around to be that service, offering other people's movies and shows as a sideline to their own shyt.

It's going to get really interesting when these streaming platforms start getting exclusive rights to all the major sports events.
"Hulu has live sports"
