I've heard good things about EMDR....can you do it alone or do you need a practitioner with you?

I’m not sure but it’s a technique not often used. Only 2 people in my city are certified to do it. The number of sessions depends on your response

Mental health isn't all about being depressed or suicidal or trauma. Even if you had a perfectly healthy childhood and are living what feels like a healthy adulthood, you can ONLY benefit in your life from sitting down with someone who has spent their studying the science behind human behaviors and experiences and gain more insight about yourself, your decisions, your emotional responses, your issues, your accomplishment, and your relationship to the world around you. You are only denying yourself even higher potential in life by declining therapy necause you "don't need it" or "I'm fine and know how to handle life." We are all making decisions, feeling the way we feel, and operating mentally and emotionally based off of a "template" of life we developed as kids from the way we were raised by our parents. You have no idea what your greater mental and emotional capacity and capability is until you try therapy, even if you feel totally content with how life feels

Mental health is part of your health. In fact its the most important sector of your health and well being because it plays such a role in your decisions and the rest of your health. You don't have to be injured or sick to see a doctor. You don't have to be obese to exercise. You don't need a cavity to see a dentist. And you don't have to be depressed to focus and work on your mental health. Don't believe that nonsense that therapy is either a frivilous hobby for rich people or a crutch for people that "can't handle life." It's apart of taking care of your health like any other part of your health.

Therapy takes TREMENDOUS strength. Having introspect about yourself, your shortcomings, your flaws, your fears takes strength. The weak one are the ones who are scared to look in the mirror, see their guilt, their fears, their errors. Scared to come to terms with things that hurt; hopes and dreams that were lost. And would rather continue living their life burying their feelings, defending and justifying their every actions, pretending to know everything and have it all figured it out, and letting all that manifest into destructive behaviors, abuse against others, substance abuse, even legal problems and so forth. Those are the people who are weak and scared of life, not the men seeking help, entering therapy, and putting in that work.

I’m waiting to see how therapy is benefiting Americans cuz I haven’t noticed a big difference in society. I know a few folks who been going for a while and they ain’t change for the better :mjlol:

I go to therapy. It’s been off and on. Probably have done 8 sessions within the last 6 months.

Here’s the thing. I’m objective and emotionally intelligent. I believe in God and can handle most situations.

My brother and I were abandoned by our mother in ‘99. 6 months later we moved in with our Aunt and Uncle for 4 years because my Dad took a position that couldn’t cater to us.

I been forgave them. Do I need to talk about it?

My mom is schizophrenic and Dad was in the military. I don’t blame them. What I will not do is abandon my own children. I brought them in this world and will do everything I can to make sure they get all the support, love and protection from me until they are out the house.

Regardless, I am open to the process and will see what it does for me. Maybe my Wife and children will benefit from it. Maybe I will be more emotionally available.

Therapy isn’t for everyone, but I think everyone should explore it. Think about the deep conversations you’ve had with your best friends, parents, siblings, or spouse. Do you really think you address everything you needed to throughout your life to them?
