Is it just me or does Common’s music just seem….. bland now?

Its weird to me, but almost all of these artists let you know through their music they are exactly who they are.
Exactly, They never hid anything about who they were. It was all in their music. They just werent one dimensional on the hoes and jewelry etc tip so they were branded as backpackers. They talked about sex drugs alcohol abuse etc as well all in their music.

Real talk, its one of the reasons why I dont take most men judgment on woman’s R&B seriously. They constantly show that they arent “listening” to what these women say in their music.

Sade was another thot. :russ:

I, for one, welcome our new space overlords.
Neo Soul and backpackers are just as scumbaggish as they ones they claim to hate… now I see why Nas dissed that genre and called out The Roots.

- Jaguar Wright was a Thot for Talib and The Roots and now she’s bitter

- Jill Scott was out here being Lizzo behind closed doors and having a affinity for swallowing dikk like a Chocolate Eclair

- Talib was working with Gucci Mane

- Mos Def out here simping up strippers

- Erykah Badu was out here getting preggo by different rappers and in the process they lost their powers.

• Andre started wearing Kilts and dressing weird.

- Questlove became a cuck

• Common went from wearing baggy pants to holding up a sign in the Come Closer video . DOC turned out fine

• Jay Electronica started dating a Rothschild
This just means they are still human though.
Were they supposed to be Christ-like just because of their earnest sound?

Music isn’t really a priority for him :yeshrug:

He’s been eating off Hollywood.

Blame Erykah Badu for neutering Common and Kanye to a point. His music became a little too eclectic after that(Electric Circus, Universal Mind Control, Finding Forever,).

I knew something was wrong when he started wearing crochet pants years ago. Since then, Common has become the safest rapper out.

He’s the Roland Martin of rap now. I haven’t looked at Common the same since he said that crap about extending our hands to cacs to stop racism.

Now imagine...if you were me.
.plus a fly on the wall..knowing beforehand. Plus witnessing how all this played out. While also flanking.
the real main character in the story and how it played out.

At least Dead Prez never messed with White meat and sold out black folks…

U got Talib and Mos smashing a bunch of vanilla groupies after shows.

Even Jill Scott was getting her big ass plowed down.

Maxwell and D’Angelo didn’t end up weird or exposed as scumbags

Maxwell and D'Angelo were already maxed out weirdos from jump.

I went back and listened to that new album from him and Pete Rock again and for some reason it was just alright

Like, it’s good when you compare it to the trash of today of course but judging it by Common’s best work, it’s just alright or average to me

I was listening to The Roots’ song Hurricane earlier tonight when I was out running errands and when you listen to Common’s verse on that versus to how he sounds on his new album and even previous albums, he just sounds like he’s coasting and nothing really giving it his best or like he lacks that edge he use to have

Anybody else think this too or is just me?

I get everything you're saying but that Soulquarians era and everyone associated with them...that was a true lightning in a bottle experience.

I have a playlist that started as a 2 disc mix that I curated back in HS (which I dubbed "Chillonious") that is just music from that collective...TIMELESS MUSIC that I intend to pass along to my niece when she's old enough.

You had peak:
Common
Roots
Pharaoh
Mos
Bilal
Dilla
D'Angelo
Badu
Talib & Hi Tek

And I'm so thankful that I got to experience at a time where I was maturing out of rap and finding my love for hip hop

Be is my favorite album from Common after that everything has been meh to me. Up to that point the only album I never liked was Electric Circus

Funny thing is it was a girlfriend I had off and on from 16-22 that got me into Common. I fukked with a few of his songs but I never really listened until One Day It’ll All Make Sense. She was into all that neo soul shyt. I was more of a Wu, Bootcamp, Nas, Mobb Deep, Redman type dude

I liked that album but I feel like that's true for most artists. It's rare someone so far in to the game puts out one of their absolute best pieces like Jay did with 4:44.

Resurrection will forever be my fav album so I'll always fukk with Common but rappers generally ain't putting out elite shyt 30+ years into the game.
