Neo Soul and backpackers are just as scumbaggish as they ones they claim to hate… now I see why Nas dissed that genre and called out The Roots.

- Jaguar Wright was a Thot for Talib and The Roots and now she’s bitter

- Jill Scott was out here being Lizzo behind closed doors and having a affinity for swallowing dikk like a Chocolate Eclair

- Talib was working with Gucci Mane

- Mos Def out here simping up strippers

- Erykah Badu was out here getting preggo by different rappers and in the process they lost their powers.

• Andre started wearing Kilts and dressing weird.

- Questlove became a cuck

• Common went from wearing baggy pants to holding up a sign in the Come Closer video . DOC turned out fine

• Jay Electronica started dating a Rothschild
hey man, they had a chance to pivot…they let the critics get to them. They’re the only real evolution the black music industry had. It took until the Soundcloud/Soulection wave to revive their project

D’Angelo is probably the only one of the bunch who didn’t end up weird…Maxwell too.

He didn’t like how the women looked at him as an object(mainly Madonna who likes BBC as a fetish).
I’m glad that he had some integrity about not pissing off his black female fanbase. That’s good because a lot of debauchery from back then is about to come to light.

Common better be hope his dirt doesn’t come out. Jag almost let out Pandora’s box on him a couple years ago.

I went back and listened to that new album from him and Pete Rock again and for some reason it was just alright

Like, it’s good when you compare it to the trash of today of course but judging it by Common’s best work, it’s just alright or average to me

I was listening to The Roots’ song Hurricane earlier tonight when I was out running errands and when you listen to Common’s verse on that versus to how he sounds on his new album and even previous albums, he just sounds like he’s coasting and nothing really giving it his best or like he lacks that edge he use to have

Anybody else think this too or is just me?

Yup! I've been saying the same for a minute.

I think the new album is dope. But something happened to Common after Be, where it seems like when he started acting and getting more into the films, he stopped having that edge and attitude in his lyrics. Just seems like he wants to be safer now, or like he has a publicist telling him how he should speak in songs.

There's sh*t that he said on the "Resurrection" remix that Large Professor did, or on De La's "The Bizness" or The Roots' "Universe At War", that he would never say today. Just clever lines that had that "wow factor" and made him one of the best. Today, he comes off as more like the actor Common doing an album. But you're right, the new vibe can definitely get boring and kinda bland. I appreciate that he's still doing his thing, and love that Pete is still killing the beats, but Common has lost a step when it comes to having that presence on the mic.

That album was food to the ears.

Can I Borrow A Dollar was good imo despite him rapping like Porky Pig and Das EFX.

Nas really had an influence on that Resurrection album.
Bro I love Can I borrow a dollar despite all the miggity miggity raps. I’m so glad he grew out of that though. Common gave me more than enough music to listen to so I’m good. :yeshrug:

I haven’t listened to a Common album since 2008 and if u play UMC nowadays, it’s a whole lot better than some albums out.

Even Common knew that the cartoonish Das EFX raps weren’t gonna make it past 94.

That’s the year that they let me on this site too…

Neo Soul is dead. It was good while it lasted.

Social media exposed guys like Mos Def and Talib Kweli as grifters.

I can see why Kanye used these cats and moved on. They were whole characters trying to be something they’re not.
