Is it fair to say that Nas is a better writer than Jay-z but Jay-z is a better rapper than Nas?

NY all day..Da Stead & BK..

Jay’s super power, and the area he has an edge on Nas, is his story is more interesting and he taps into his ACTUAL life better than Nas. His stories are more consistently personal. And if you’ve followed him it’s like one big connected story

Perfect example is his feature on Love All. That’s not about lyricism or writing it’s about making you feel it bc you know it’s real.

nikkas wanted to kill me and y'all still with 'em
nikka, y'all chill with 'em, and y'all wonder why we not friends?
Best thing I can do is not build with you
When I could destroy you, that takes some fukkin' discipline

Gives me fukin chills. Any rapper could say a line like that, but it’s different with Jay bc you know it’s FACTUAL, 100% real, you know who it’s aimed at, you know that yes he could destroy him, etc…it makes it and him different
I disagree with u on this as well. Nas is very vivid when he's spoken on his past and Jay's past is more interesting in ur opinion but I'm my opinion Nas a more layered past.

When u got 2 nikkas as elite as these 2 its a very hard comparison.
Yep even tho I troll the Hovengers a lot they make different styles of music., It's all about preference imo. There's joints Nas has done that Jay could never do( Fetus I Gave you Power Rewind). Some of those commercial songs I couldn't picture Nas doing :manny:

I think when people commend Nas’s writing prowess it’s not “songwriting” specifically…it’s the graphic writing itself…the vividness…his words encapsulate exactly what he’s trying to convey to the point you can almost smell it, it’s pictorial . Like NYSOM2, Jayz/Nobody could paint like that with words imo and still make it sound rhythmically that fire and on point with the flows and shyt, shyt is ridiculous. He’s more Alan Moore than Quentin Miller or sumn lol, I wasn’t surprised at all when I found out he used to write comics.

And on top of all that, he’s also an unreal lyricist..

Never knew murder till I seen my man get popped
No blood soaking, laying there, eyes still open
I got a little closer, put my hand in his palm
He was looking right through me, Yo staring beyond

That's as vivid as it gets anybody seen somebody get shot leave the earth understands that

If any rapper could say it, then it's not "elite song writing". It's just preference.

Nas can get personal, of course. But you don’t get it as consistently. And not recently. Ie Nas has 4 albums in 3 years and perhaps not 1 truly personal track. He just rappin :whoa:

And I love all 4 of em but not one is as deep as 4:44. Also an area where Jay edges him is his features. That’s often where he really goes in his personal bag. Drug dealers anonymous, seen it all, written testimony …

Jay said it best ‘I could make 4 more albums off memory’.

No one has got as personal as Nas i don't think you know what you're talking about respectfully.

Just on his last couple albums.

Had yellow jaundice when I was born
Kept me in an incubator, ten days long
I made up songs, I was like humming tunes ten years later
Writin' in my room ten years after that, on stage like it's too soon, but
For me see, my parents met inside a nightclub
Olu started to fight, and then my moms broke it up
She said, "This boy he's in the Navy, settle down before y'all need savin'"
Pop went to war around the world, came home, we celebrated

Not true

When you know the spitter is speaking real facts it makes the bar unique and takes it to another level. Jay has a ton of these

‘I’m not a businessman I’m a business, man’. That’s a bar bc it’s actually true

‘had to take off the blazer, loosen up the tie, step inside the booth, super man is alive’ :scust:

That’s not just a clever Superman line that’s elite bc it’s TRUE and it would only make sense if jay said it

And since I know there’s a anti-jay sentiment on here I’ll use a non-jay example:

Ya mother was at games, cardboard colors, fresh signs...my mother was in pain, you want to speak to the inmate? press 9”- Tsu Surf

That bar is next level bc of who said it and bc you know he/it is authentic

Hoev is a pop artist. He is a better songwriter in the sense he knows how to make a catchy song.

Nas is rap's Shakespeare. Not as easily digestible but the standard lyrically.

Can’t have it both ways. When jay drops a magna carta or bp3, while Nas drops Life is Good, we rightfully give Nas credit for being WAY more personal and introspective.

So now we gotta do the same. Nas dropped 4 albums with no theme or rhyme or reason, and jay dropped 4:44 an album specifically about growth, wealth, family, marriage. So give jay his credit the same way. These hit boy albums ain’t got shyt for 4:44 from a depth point of view

This is preference... again. "nas actually has gone half a century with a crispy line up" best line ever.

The hell are you taking about ‘preference’. This is all art. It’s ALL “preference”
