is it fair to say PC's will hold back next-gen consoles?

At least until they also adopt a similar I/O solution that the Ps5/Xbox has? Since developers tend to make their games to cater to the lowest common denominator , and PC's dont have SSD's as a baseline.

it will be interesting if we see PC games that require an SSD. I'd like to say most serious PC gamers have an SSD(s), but I know some don't. Steam should include it in their hardware survey

but games will only be 'held back' if the SSD is required for stuff that's not scalable

it all remains to be seen how this will all work out. (some) PC's will still have more raw computational power than these consoles, plus more wattage, and better cooling solutions

Nah, the other way around.

And having “faster ssds” doesn’t matter. PC gamers have had access to Nvme M.2 storage that is much faster than “regular” ssds. I have one in my pc. There are virtually no differences in real world load times between my M.2 and SSD drives, and my M.2 is technically much faster :yeshrug:

it has more to do with the PS5's storage architecture, than just the speed of the SSD. it basically eliminates a lot of bottlenecks and allows the SSD to stream data directly to the GPU. what you said is exactly what Linus is apologizing for saying in the video in the OP

the PS5 SSD is needed because the console is weak and they need special tactics in order to deliver next gen quality at a console price

The GPU's on PC don't need an SSD to render a game, I don't even boot my games on PC off my SSD and virtually have no load times

besides all AAA games are designed for consoles anyway, there are no big PC game developers

pc hardware is never optimized for any of those games, I mean the 1080ti has 11 gb of ram and on max settings I only used 5 and some change of it

PCs will never hold back consoles, but consoles will always be the standard of what gaming is, while PCs incrementally get better.

PCs havent advanced nearly as fast from year to year as they used to, but they will always catch up to and be stronger than consoles in any given generation.

The real bottleneck of a gaming console is a gpu...

So no, pc's won't hold back consoles...

I swear 70% of the internet have no idea what a SSD really is and how it would affect games.

This is the video that was referenced that Linus referred to in his clip. The dude speaking is a game developer and he basically translates Cerny's reveal into easy-to-understand language from someone who develops games for a living.

TL;DW:
The PS5 is powerful as shyt and does custom things so that the console it is more efficient than other options. Developers can completely trash a lot of the 'tricks' that they had to utilize before to ensure that everything loaded correctly which results in more freedom to be creative.

As a result of the custom configurations, you cannot have a one-to-one comparison based on the spec sheet which is hard to understand when comparing it to a PC, which is why Linus ended up eating his own words in the video above.
