I can't understand how you figure that Desus and Mero are less popular than Akademics? They have a show that from what it seems is doing pretty well on an actual TV station and Akademics is at the place they were a few years ago. They have been guest on late night shows where the host would have no idea who Akademics is nor would they give a fukk. They also have a sponsored podcast and are on a show on Netflix. These are all way bigger than Akademics talking to teenagers on YouTube.
Also it seems like the hip hop world has an inflated view of what Complex is in the real world. If you look up their net worth it's like 200-300 million while Vice is worth billions. I'm sure Desus and Mero are making more than Buddens did at Complex and definitely way more than Akademics.
See I've got no beef with either of them and both of us are not invested
My issue was that it seems, and I may be mistaken, that they pick on him more due to him not probably going through the normal route

Ak seems unorthodox which plays to his strength.
It doesn't matter tho how long desus and mero has been on because they blew up at the wrong time...it's a luck of the "tech draw" so to speak as everything is based on steaming payment models going forward which playa to ak's strength
And he monetizes through several branches as opposed to just hip hop
Gaming are quite loyal fans and they are kids unlike us so they're more likely to continue support a steaming content because they don't know another world when it was different like ours.
