Is it a shame that blacks don't listen to or have a historical appreciation of jazz and blues?

Or are these simply dead musical genres that it is okay to forget about?

Can anything be gained by increasing listenership or teaching African-American children about this music or it's history? Or is this basically a waste of time and there are more important issues to worry about?

Japan, but from the 989
I have a hard time finding any Black children or young people who don't know ANYTHING about Jazz or Blues. Now they may not be enthused about making Jazz or Blues music but it's not like they are totally ignorant of the music. Several well known Hip Hop artist use Jazz and Blues regularly through samples. Like how Strange Fruit was used in "Blood on the Leaves" on Kayne's new album.

I don't think a couple of hip hop artists using jazz in their music really represents African American's knowledge of jazz and blues. They are professional musicians. They should know far more about different musical genres than 95% of us.

And though young people may know something about it, it does not constitute actually listening to it or having an appreciation for it.

I personally love the blues and jazz, but I don't think it's a shame if others don't- taste and culture changes over time. Most white kids aren't listening to Elvis or Frank Sinatra.

I think you are underestimating young people a little. In order to understand Jazz and Blues you have to accept their grandchildren Hip Hop. And when people really look at the lives and music of Jazz/Blues musicians you will see they aren't as different from the Hip Hop artist we have today. But those who get into Hip Hop seriously, listen to Jazz and Blues because a MAJORITY of the music today is inspired from it.

They at least know about Lep Zepplin, and groups like Queen. Most of our young <25 don't know whatever the equivalent to that is. Some even know about Eddie Van Halen. More white kids know about Jimi Hendrix than black kids..... and he was black.

I would bet my life no black kids know who Chuck Berry is.... shyt I barely know.

Lol, we know about Sade and maybe a couple of other people.... that is a shame to me.

Is it really that bad? I mean, Zeppelin and Queen were 70s groups. You don't think people know soul or funk from the 70s? Motown?

ur right but....

i speak to a bunch of young people and..... it's a combination of funny and sad - when you ask about these things.

Not to underestimate but.... 90+% know uoeno less than 5% probably know any of what your talking about. I literally heard a young rat the other day say that Versace was her 'shyt'. ..lol, I was dead when she played that song on her phone. Not too many of us are getting into hip hop seriously like that.

yea it's that bad. Outside of people who kept making music like Prince and MJ we (our youth) don't know it. I go over older white guys homes... their kids play guitar hero know lyrics to these random groups... but even without the video game white guys hype of their old school shyt.... they speak on so n so was the greatest guitarist. etc.

most older black guys just hit u with "that shyt aint real music" back in my day. "
