Friday is just one of those magic in a bottle moments. You could put Cube and Pooh together in a room and give them $50 million and they still wouldn't be able to capture that magic again.
On another note, the editors for New Line deserve a ton of credit. I watched the directors cut of the movie and it isI actually feel bad for the people whose first time watching Friday is the directors cut...they gonna come away thinking it's overrated
The jokes go on way too long and the comedic timing is way off. In a movie like this with so many comedians, you know most of it is loosely based on the script, and a lot of the interactions and lines are improvised. It's up to the editors to take all that overacting and jokes shot from the hip and create a scene that works. I didn't really realize it until I watched the directors cut how thin the line was betweenand
Comedian improv on film is probably 30% funny and 70% not funny, and it's all about collecting as much of the 30% as possible and cutting that other shyt out. And the editors for the theatrical cut did an amazing job in making the movie as funny as it is by knowing when scenes needed to cut to reactions, transition, and end.
