You assume he didn't come up with the movement.
No, I am not giving him that much credit. A rich white billionaire can only be but so connected to the struggle. The movement was already there before #blacklivesmatter it just didn't have a name.

I'm not too familiar with the movement, but from what I can see they're definitely gaining popular support. I think the movement can and should continue to grow. I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting the politicians that you plan to vote for to address your very real concerns. If we don't try to highlight the importance of our issues then who will?

Someone offer you money and you take it, people are greedy, it's what it is.

Money to do what? I think the money was there from day 1. I do not think this movement was ever genuine.

Yeah 2010's black awareness kinda triggered during the Trayvon Martin case don't you think? It was huge.

There was no "movement"

So I take it they will do this to EVERY candidate? I mean they even did it to Obama last month.....I expect Hilary to have her day if this is truly innocent.

That can't be done without respect and research? All movements in the US and elsewhere were only successful once they were inclusive. Not shouting down old men who were in he civil rights movement. You can't blog to freedom, occupy tried and crashed and burned.

There was no hashtag but the initial event around trayvon was heavy.

If they're serious about the issues then they should. Is the general feeling that they have some bias towards Hilary?

They just want the right to be black while being unblack as possible if that makes sense.

Exactly. Full integration and acceptance by the White power structure, instead of cultivating Black enclaves.

I have yet to hear any criticism coming from that movement towards Hilary. In fact, when Hilary got on Twitter to say "Black Lives Matter" after slipping up a few weeks earlier by saying "All Live Matter" at a Black church, they were cheering like they won the olympics.

Trayvon Martin: How Social Media Became The Biggest Protest
Beyonce, Rihanna, Diddy and Amber Rose weighed in throughout the case — from Martin's death to Zimmerman's acquittal.

Twitter was practically groaning Saturday under the weight of a sea of protests from the likes of Nicki Minaj and Miley Cyrus after a Florida jury found George Zimmerman not guiltyin the shooting death of Trayvon Martin last February. These tweets, scattered with hashtags like #nojustice and #RipTrayvonMartin, were just a small part of a massive social media-spun protest between the 17-year-old high school student’s shooting and Zimmerman’s “not guilty” verdict.

In February of 2012, Trayvon Martin was found shot and killed, George Zimmerman standing over his body holding a handgun. Martin was unarmed, wielding only a bottle of iced tea and a bag of Skittles. Zimmerman said he shot Martin in self-defense and walked away from the scene. He was later arrested on April 11 and charged with second-degree murder in the shooting after months of protests.

Those protests, to a large degree, were created online — first with a petition posted to Change.org by Martin’s family. That petition, made on March 8, saw support from the likes of Janelle Monae and MC Hammer, who both urged people to sign. The petition soon became the fastest-growing campaign in the site’s history, netting 250,000 signatures in its first few days. It got 2,278,988 signatures total.

There are like thousands of these articles on the internet.

But none of this carried over into an actual movement in which people went city to city organizing and protesting every incident of police brutality.

Yes. They want to maintain the status quo.
Exactly. Full integration and acceptance by the White power structure, instead of cultivating Black enclaves.

I think conceptions of "respect" matter less when we're dealing with the kind of issues Blacks face in America We're frequently disrespected and disregarded by the media, politicians, judges, law enforcement and the regular citizenry in this country. The kind of oppression that we face in the U.S. calls for what some might consider radical action. If that involves taking over a stage or two and confronting politicians then I think it's worth doing.

I also think it's correct to make politicians acknowledge and address your specific concerns, regardless of how progressive you believe their background to be. Too often we vote for people who we think, for whatever reason, have our best interests at heart and then simply sit at home and hope for the best. The effects of that type of activism have been poor to say the least. While there's no doubt that Bernie Sanders has a respectable history as a politician and activist, I don't think that lets him off the hook. I don't think that means we should simply trust that he will address our issues without significant pressure from our side.
