End of the day it got the most votes from gaming outlets and fans. Voting is 90% those outlets and 10% fans but those groups are made up entirely of gamers.

And if 90% of the “influencers” talking about games are out of touch with the people playing games, then there’s some type of disconnect going on between how games are talked about online and how/which games people are playing.

Asobi just made a name for itself this year and Astro is an exclusive based around PlayStation ip, so the sales numbers aren't going to be as high the first go around especially since it dropped later in the year. They won GOTY off the quality of the art. It's like Godzilla Minus One winning a VFX Oscar with a fraction of other studios budgets.

Sometimes with games it's just about pure fun. This is a similar kind of GOTY to It Takes Two imo. How many people sit down to play couch co-op on a regular basis? But if you played it you can't say it didn't deserve it

It takes two was a new IP from an unknown studio and it sold lots more than astrobot.

Can’t think of any other game/movie/music/etc that was so far off in sales from media perception and hype.
