Nas actually explained this in an interview with Allhiphop.com when a lot of this was happening in real time

Irv Gotti was the only one to publicly support Nas while he was battling Jay-Z and Roc-A-Fella. Remember Nas REALLY felt some sort of way when Hot 97 wouldn’t let him lynch that Jay-Z robot at Summer Jam and after he went crazy on them during the infamous Power 105 interview, the station soft blackballed him. Irv came along at this point and was saying he had Nas back and Ja Rule was saying the same thing. Basically Irv came along at a point where Nas felt he needed allies and Irv said at this point that Ja was too big for the streets but street nikkas worshipped Nas so signing Nas would be a way for Murda Inc to keep their street credibility

After Nas saw that Irv was a fukking clown he cooled on the association and decided not to sign with them and re-up with Columbia.

I wish Allhiphop would have kept they’re archive of interviews, they had some GREAT interviews with Nas, Jay-Z, Beanie Sigel, The Bravehearts ( the infamous “Soul Clap” interview) 50 Cent, Cam’ron, etc around 01-03 that shed some real insight onto the time period.

Also Nas references the situation on wax here

man. I know it came from his mouth but nas will say things to sugar coat shyt. I’m sure he always knew irv was a weirdo try hard, I cant think he ever thought this was a good move straight from a rico…. like I wanna believe he just gassed irv but never took the signing thing serious similar to how he make people think he gonna do albums with them or do a feature and irv took it and ran and nas ain’t want to hurt his feelings. I also wondered if this was going to start the death row east thing with lakey and help him out but then realized this whole shyt sound like some shyt the feds would Have the binoculars. who knows but irv been seen as a try hard even back then for me to believe this shyt was actually given any serious thought.

From all accounts Nas gave it serious thought. Everybody believed it was a real thing at one point. There were articles written about it. Even Jay himself commented on it during an interview with Hot 97.

Lets not forget that although Irv has always been a goofy, he’s also a HUSTLER right up there with Jay, Steve Stoute, Kevin Liles, ect. He’s a hell of a visionary. And he’s a talented producer in his own right. He helped make Ja not just a star, but a SUPERSTAR. Ja was doing blockbuster movies, tv shows, sold out tours, writing hits for JLo, the whole nine. Irv helped make Ashanti a star who almost as popular as Beyonce during they’re hey day. He had Charlie Baltimore poppin. Murda Inc was at one point on top of the world. Nas would at LEAST have wanted to see what they could offer him, and according to Irv the deal he had on the table for Nas would have been more than favorable.

But again, Nas being who he is, seeing that the success was getting to Irv’s head and not only did he want to be alllllll in the videos, but he also wanted to snort ecstasy, fukk his artists, and do stupid and dangerous promo stunts, he saw the writing on the wall.

So i’d say it was both smart of Nas to seriously consider the partnership and also to have the sense of mind to turn it down.

I guess i see th8ngs different. I don’t think irv made ja a super star. He wanted ja to be like DMx. Ja wanted to separate himself which is when he got into the female type songs and laid his singing down. That was all ja rules decision. Ashanti came up in that fat joe hit and took off from being behind the “hot” label and had the ja stimulus package. Charlie Baltimore??? Cmon fam. Don’t do that….
