Don't get me wrong, I agree with the Civil Rights movement but we should've stopped at equal rights and protection under the law. I fully agree with the laws and amendments that came out of that movement. But...we shouldn't have begged to intregate into white society. That's where we fukked up. The Black Power Movement was our chance to get economically independent, which we can all agree is what we need the most. The realest freedom we can aspire to in this country.

During that time frame (Black Power in the 1960s) we started to come into our own and form a viable culture. Black banks, political movements, black entertainment successfully reaching the masses, ect. We were gaining ground in this society. Creating a meaningful self sustaining culture.
So what happened? :leostare:

Capitalism brehs. We started making the American dream our dream. A dream that was never designed for us. We had our own dreams to aspire to. We became trend setters, but instead of captializing off of our own sh1t, we chose to beg for acceptance in a community that never pretended to love or accept us. Still continues to this day. We gave them power by working within their framework instead of forming our own. But I didn't say all this to state the obvious. We can still fix this sh1t...

Here's some introspection...

What's important to you? Clothes? Shoes? what some next nugga thinks? Is you turnt up? Of course that sh1t's important. It's part of what makes us US! Our style, our swag, and our egos. Like I said, we don't follow trends, we set them.

:manny:

But think about what else we are. Resourceful, resilient, inventive, intellectual, loyal to a fault, and musical to the point where it trancends language and culture, ect. Athletic and strong as hell. So why is our materialism and violence always seen as representative of us as a people? Naw, fukk that. That's the wrong question. The real question is: To whom are we asking even that question? We all kmow the answer, but it doesnt even matter. We are the ones taking that sh1t to heart and perpetuating it.

on top of that i think what went wrong is that we started using integration as a measuring stick for progress and using civil rights as if it was an actual economic plan

like why is it a bad thing if a school or city is 80-90 percent black, that should be a great opportunity for black people but we look at it as something bad

Exactly...our standards are good enough. We don't need to follow mainstream America's standards. People keep talking about how Obama doesn't do anything for the black agenda. We can't even come up with a consensus on what the black agenda is. Other racial or cultural or religious or societal groups have their agenda.

We are too disjointed to present an agenda and even if we had one, who are we asking? The government? Its as simple as moving your money to black banks. Not all of it if you have vested interests elsewhere, but enough to help make our banks economically viable. Get black banks on a level when they can lend to black business. This promotes employment, competition, innovation. Just something as easy as moving our money to black financial institutions and investment house. This is how we can afford to lobby our agenda in the big arena where it matters. We also have to hold these places accountable to our community, too.

Look at the board of directors of Citizens Trust Bank: Citizens Trust Bank. :whew:

Now don't me wrong, we can't place out trust in one place or blindly think that these people will automatically serve our interest because we all look the same. We will have to approach this from an economical prospective. They serve us and our interest, we purchase and spend with them. Same goes with all black businesses.

Sick of talking about it brehs...let's do something about it. You want to be part of a movement, let's make it about something real.

This Zimmerman sh1t made me think...when are we gonna stop all this damn talking. We complain about wanting them to treat us right - fukk that. New Black Power movement, ya feel me? Let's stop being selfish and get serious about this.

Aside from Donald Ratajczak, that's a lovely sight....:salute:

Here's the thing though, we wanted resources and facilities integrated...

There was no reason to leave the community whatsoever...

But we did due to our own inferiority complexes...

I can't say it was integration directly, but it appears that it revealed how fragile our mental makeup could be after slavery\Jim Crow

I think most of the cats that benefited from the movement and left the community initially, didn't even actively participate in the civil rights movement

you guys don't understand. the "downfall" of the black community was the result of a concerted effort on a national and local scale to control and diminish the power of the black community. it's no longer a conspiracy theory, it's a well known truth.

the impact of those efforts are still reaping effects generations later. and we have new problems that are offshoots or side-effects.

these discussions have to be taken further. it's ok to say what's wrong with what some black people have been doing, but you have to provide alternatives and suggestions as well.

what do you suggest the black community's dream should be?

what should be the black community's standards?

personally i think many black people are already chasing these things, but aren't committed to their goals. they get distracted, sometimes by design. admittedly this isn't always our fault. lots of trojan horses out there.

we should definitely fight for our individual rights and economic rights, but i think where it went wrong is that people confuse fighting for thoes rights with an actual plan, integrating with out an actual plan is useless

education is a good example, we should definitely fight government mandated segregation because a black person should be able to go to whatever school they want to

but if you make integration the actual plan to improve to improve black education, which is what happened, then that will be a problem IMO, because integration isnt a real plan to improve black education, integration was premised on the idea that white schools are better than black schools

but improving black education would require dealing with things that really only black could do like improving black culture and black oriented history

Dawg:comeon:

I already said in the OP that economic independence, or at least some real economic power, is a very real and attainable dream. That should be the goal. We can spark this movement by moving our money or at least some of it to black owned banks. Citizens Trust Bank is an example that I gave. Also, here is a list of other black owned banks to research: 2013′s African American Owned Bank Directory | HBCU Money. We also need to try to spend our money at black owned businesses. But more than that, we need to only do it with businesses who are working to better our community. Hold them accountable, not let bullsh1t slide when it comes to how we spend our money.

Talk sh1t to and about our representatives. We were all legal experts during the trial, let's be that way when it comes to voting. Not saying we gotta be all consumed, just be on notice when somebody claims to represent our interests.

I know about COINTELPRO and the concerted effort to bring down black leaders during that time frame. I also know that ain't nobody force us to move out to the burbs and take our tax money with us. Or to glorify only the bad sh1t about the hood. We were purposely distracted from that before, we don't have to stay distracted.
