According to an interview I saw, he already stated that the entire department out there already knew who he was. At the end of the interview he stated as such. Leaving me the impression that he was on some ole "If I come up missing, ya already know why".

Putting himself in the spotlight was, I'm guessing, his strategy (whether you agree with it or not, is another story).

The cops involved also knew he was there the entire time as well and you best believe he would put the word out.
