This won't help them. The like feature keeps people invested, yeah it leads to people pandering and doing the most for approval but it also keeps people coming back and contributing free content. If thecoli took reps and daps away it wouldn't lead to a more honest dialogue it would lead to people going to sites with the removed 'like' feature.

You can still see your own likes. You just won't be able to see anyone else's.

You can actually turn off comments already. So they'll likely make it so you have the option to turn off likes.

They are doing this because they want to mess with peoples money an take advantage of that business opportunity. Likes are a commodity and advertisers use that as a metric on who they decide to use to advertise their stuff. Of course instagram wants to control that so they can control who gets to advertise on instagram.
