So many Twitter-style hot takes. This has nothing to do with African/black naivete or however you guys want to describe it. Its simply a political move by Uhuru, to ensure that Indians vote and strongly support him in a tightly contested election next month. There's nothing more to it. The rest of the stuff yall are droning on about is pure projection.

Its up to Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania to hold down East Africa. Kenya seems like they don't know what the hell they doing. They already lost being the largest economy in EA to freaking Ethiopia of all countries along with many other Ls.
Lets be honest, if there's any country in East Africa likely to turn modern first is Kenya and I would like to say it's not even close. Better way of living, economy more diverse and Ethiopia has a higher economy because it double's kenya's population size. Ethiopia is coming from a very low base. It would take alot for them to catch up with Kenya.

btw, are people still running with the narrative that indians still run Kenya economically?

Judging from all the comments, this seems to be the most common sense answer here. Are you Kenyan?

Yall nikkaz dont understand the history:snoop:

Under the British Empire. Cacs took hundreds of thousands of indians from India as slaves to come to Kenya to build train tracks & infrastructure. After Kenya got their independance from the british empire, a lot of indians settled in Kenya & never went back to India.

Thats why Kenyans are finally accepting these Indians as Kenyans as they have been there for decades.
:ohhh::ohhh::ohhh: oh shyt that explains why this Indian kid in my class was adamant about him being kenyan instead of indian

No, but I know the country well and follow its politics.

The idea that this symbolic declaration means that black Kenyans are giving up political power to Indians is absurd. The elections are fought primarily along ethnic/tribal lines, so this mean smaller non-aligned blocs that move between the two major coalitions are valuable. Its the same for other minorities in the country including Somalis. See:

Wow that is interesting!

The dominant political groups are the Kikuyus and Luos, if i am correct. I heard in Kenyan politics is divided along ethnic lines?
