She also said the ruling class were predominantly light skin so to speak and that the caste system compounded with British colonialism has placed a large emphasis on the importance of colour or fairness particularly amongst women .... Dalits (those oppressed people right down the bottom of the caste ranking list) eat beef. The priestly caste, who rank right at the top of the caste system, are so severely vegetarian that traditional people belonging to this class won't even eat onions and garlic, or any product from cows except milk and butter/ghee.

So the white man who loves his spaghetti bolognese and his Angus steaks is for the conservative Indian, the same thing as a Dalit - right at the bottom of the pile. A conservative high caste Indian would not eat food in a white man's house, nor would they permit a white man to cook for them, because they are polluted by eating beef.

Not necessarily true fam. A lot of north Indian Brahmins eat meat, and beef eating is in the scriptures.

Strict vegetarianism in India was actually brought about through Jain and Buddhist influence, that's why south India, gujurat, and Maharashtra have the most vegetarians. It was a cultural phenomenon that got woven into religious tradition of particular communities over time.

As for caste or varna, it's based on lineage ie; who your parents are, that's it.
