Austin has said the heel turn was his idea, and it was the wrong move. It was an idea purely to have a "big moment" for WM, which they were lacking, going in. He also said he wished he called an audible post match and stunned McMahon in a "I used and outsmarted you" move, which leaves him in a neutral/badass position and not fully heel after demolishing Rock with a chair to win.
Two Man Powertrip was never a specifically planned thing, but a proxy of Triple H being connected to McMahon at the time of Austin aligning with Vince himself.
So I think they did a great job of making sense and adapting a storyline out of such a dumb booking decision. (which includes why Austin aligned with his biggest enemy, why Triple H aligned with his biggest enemy, and also setting up Austin and Triple H to run it back down the line (until injury).
