Minus the defense, but I definitely see the resemblance. Dudes got some great footwork and knows how to attack angles, but he's gotta get stronger. He had a solid fg% but would be much more effective around the basket by being able to really power through the contact he gets down there. I think he could be a consistent 20/10 player, and with more weapons on offense even give you 3-4 ast too. Just need that Drummond falling thing to work out so he could have potentially the perfect frontcourt mate.
Good to hear Knight getting stronger too. Main thing is he needs to work on his decision making and consistency. Don't wanna see 25 point games then 2 or 3 straight games of single digits next year. I'm liking the core of youth as long as they can get rid of Gordon and Charlie V somehow in the next year or so.
And unlike a lot of folks I really didn't have a problem with the Iverson trade. I would have rather they moved Sheed at the time because it left Stuckey without a pg mentor and team without the person that held them together. But I recognized the AI trade for what it was. Time to start breaking up the team and AI was a low risk gamble because if it didn't work, he was a rental that freed up a nice chunk of capspace after he was gone. The problem is what Joe did with the capspace. He was stuck on that reload shyt instead of fully committing to rebuilding. It's why we keep ending up with these late lottery picks instead of top 4. Well that and the stupid ass late season win streaks they've been going on.
That is the key right there. Signing Charlie and Ben basically wasted the cap room thereby nullifying any good feelings that could have been had about the Iverson trade. I can't give him credit for lucking into Monroe and Knight in back to back years when he was actually trying to be competitive.
c/s I read the first page of this thread and was about to make these same points.
The Iverson trade wasn't a bad gamble per se... we had seen what AI could do with a bunch of defensive minded "role players" 8 years prior with that '01 sixers team... only difference was that was 8 years ago and the piston players were too prideful in how things had been run to let a washed up version of AI dictate how the team was gonna play from there on out.. even if they were washed up themselves.
With that being said, the manner in which Dumars acquired AI was just stupid. At the very start of the season you extend Hamilton's contract and then you trade his best friend days after.. and you do so for a guy who's not known for leadership or being a healthy locker room presence? That came across as some sneak shyt to the players so that was already strike 1. Then you bring in Mike Curry as the head coach, who ain't no phil jackson gregg poppovich or larry brown when it comes to dealing with hot heads/divas... nor is he a competent x's and o's coach either.. nor did he have much experience in coaching (i don't believe) prior to this head coaching gig... so you gonna place him at the helm of a perennial championship contending team with veteran players who lacked a sense of urgency, prob thought they were better than they actually were, and were known to be out right rebellious to their coaching staff at times...? And that was before AI came aboard..
that was strike 2 (or 1 actually).
but alllllll that wouldn't have mattered if he hadn't thought charlie and gordon were somehow going to keep Detroit afloat as contenders. With all the trouble the guard rotation had with ai rip and stuckey... why the hell would you sign ben gordon right after all that? that shyt, all of that shyt, was just terrible and i dont mean in hindsight. i mean i'm lookin at that shyt when it was happening like "oh ok joe d.. you say we don't got to wait til the 2010 free agency to make big moves... uh ok.. so what you got? wait.. what the fuk?" smh
