Patriotism encourages commonality and cohesiveness within a people, which is a necessary part of maintaining and protecting a country from threats. Xenophobia is an issue but I feel like people actively discourage racism which is the real issue anyway. I don't feel as though American patriotism encourages racism. If anything, it discourages such. If you mean that patriots tends not to give a fukk about other countries, well, good.

Whenever I think of pledging allegiance to America now, I think of the history associated with it and how I'm related to it. The older I get the more I find out how fukked up this country is in it's current state with it's treatment towards African Americans. Along with that knowledge comes with finding out how horrific the history of America is concerning African Americans.

How can someone hold pride in something that does not treat you as you should?
