Most Americans go to college in the hopes of a secure financial future. Many don't get it

  • A secure financial future is what most Americans hope to get with their college degree.
  • Yet half of the country's colleges in 2018 left the majority of their former students earning less than $28,000 a year, according to a new report.

Twenty/20
A secure financial future is what most Americans hope to get with their college degree. More than 80% of freshmen students say they pursued higher education "to be able to get a better job." Another popular reason? "To make more money."

Many college students, then, are likely to be disappointed.

That's because half of the country's schools in 2018 left the majority of their former students earning less than $28,000 a year, which is what the typical high school graduate makes. The finding comes from a new report by Third Way, a think tank in Washington, D

"I think anyone should be surprised by that," said Michael Itzkowitz, a senior fellow at Third Way. "What this shows is that institutions across the United States are not meeting the main expectations of today's students.

"While there are a lot of intangible benefits of attending an institution of higher education, we should also expect that students are getting at least a minimum return on their educational investment," he added.

The think tank analyzed the earnings data of students from nearly 4,000 colleges.

All kinds of colleges led to underwhelming salaries, Third Way found.

However, for-profit schools are 10 times more likely than private or public colleges to have the vast majority of their students earning below $28,000 a year, according to Itzkowitz.

"By far, the for-profit sector shares some of the most worrisome employment outcomes within higher education today," Itzkowitz said
.

There are some 7,000 for-profit schools in the U.S, which take in around 15% of the government's financial aid funding.

To make matters worse, colleges are charging more now than ever.

One year at a nonprofit private school, including tuition, room and board, currently costs $48,510, compared with $22,240 in 2000. And so students graduate with more debt — around $30,000 on average. Around 30% student borrowers are in delinquency or default.

"Without an opportunity to earn a decent living, it's going to be increasingly difficult to pay down their educational debt over time," Itzkowitz said.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos in Junerepealed the gainful employment rule, an Obama-era regulation aimed at holding low-quality education programs accountable by forcing them to prove their graduates were able to repay their student debt

And yeah, a lot of STEM majors are getting low-balled in the job market.

People been going to STEM and still getting underpaid. How many engineers that are 22-24 making 6 figures outta school?

The "Free Market" is flawed and people will soon behead and massacre their employers.

but they will go at their govt with no hesitation

americans aint doin that and will get smashed if they do.

you had mfs in Ukraine with makeshift shields gettin shot at by govt snipers

Europeans will get smashed too and they rarely do it, no more than Americans. Back then maybe, when you had a big socialist movement. Today? Nah. People are just watching Netflix. Nobody is ready for that heat, whether in Europe or in the US.

Ukraine is more a civil war situation. And eastern Europe is more of a violent place compared to western Europe.

Your average French, Germans, etc is not going to war against the gov. And if he does, the gov will use its power.

Get a degree, they said... don't worry about those student loans, they said... you'll make 60k right out of college, they said...

Your face when they realized they lied to you, and you're 80k in debt and making barely above minimum wage: :mjcry:

You have to be a fool to automatically think that having a stem degree will automatically land you a six figure job. When it comes to engineering degrees you have so many specialist fields that are not always in demand to receive good pay.You have electrical, civil, petroleum and the list goes on.The majority of entry level position are not going to pay you a six figure salary. Senior pay at a top company = six figures but you need 5 or more years of experience
Plus you have other factors such as a lack of demand, nepotism, economic probability and patterns that leads to employment cutbacks. And average to below average schools that are not good at producing good graduates who lack the work experience and who lack the ability to network.Plus how many american graduates are willing to relocate to another country to improve job their prospects?
When you look at the pattern and see the subjects we should not be surprised. Liberal arts, social science, psychology, biology and the list goes on.Such fields have the highest rate of unemployment and underemployment.
