I like how Kaufman approaches storytelling and filmmaking even if I can't say I get much fulfillment out of it. His films ironically are a prime example of parts working better than the sum of them all. Jessie Buckley is fantastic, Thewlis and Collette chew scenery but with grandeur and Plemons is well, Plemons...
The cinematography and editing work perfectly in combination with the increasing sense of anxiety and wrongfulness of the events transpiring. But Kaufman also does too much, rehashing the same type of heavy referential discussion a time too many. For someone who makes such abstract films he really hammers that nail all the way through the board.
I think the film touches upon many great themes and largely handles them well, but too often is slogged down by its own pretensions.
His editing undermines it, particularly apparent in the car segments
