can you use a portable hardrive instead of a usb stick? i dont want to buy a usb stick

Yeah, unless you make the harddrive only for the xbox, because if you wanted to use it again, you would have to reformat it, usb stick is easy and costly, hell you could ask anybody if they have a spare and get it for free.
