Most people think that, but it's not. You're probably confusing it with Medicaid, which is free for low-income people, regardless of age. You can drop your old insurance at 65, and switch to Medicare. I'll probably wound up keeping my old insurance, and have Medicare as well. I also plan on buying a long-term care policy. When you get up there in age, long-term care becomes important, even more when you're single, and can't depend on your offspring(s) to help you if you get sick.If you’re 65 you’re eligible for MediCARE.
