I agree with this. More emphasis is placed on buying pre packaged and pre prepared foods.
Even in home cooking, your pre grated cheese is coated in anticaking agent and cost more for 150g, you pay for the grating of the cheese itself and the chemicals. By allowing them to prepare the food for you, you willingly gobble up inferior product.
Ppl need to go to the butchers and the fishmonger and get familiar with farmers markets. Until you know good quality meat and veg you will continually be ripped off.
For example:
Dont buy fish with cloudy eyes, it has started to deteriorate and the flesh would be like mush. If they gut it, scale it, and chop off the head for you; you dont even know what fish your getting and it cost twice as much.
The fish's eyes are the way to tell the freshness of the fish, they should sparkle and gleam, the flesh should be firm and it should smell faintly of the sea. Also you can find out what day the catch comes in and ensure you get the freshest possible.
