I'm a Cranky Old Head from the 80s... But Kendrick Lamar is Top 10 All Time

Neck ties and boxing gloves.
He's past the point of potential. 3 albums, 4 if you consider S80 one, that artistically hit the bullseye. He needs 3 more?

You never know.

It only takes one punch.

Think Hov. It took The Blueprint to have the Source to retroactively give him 5 mics for Reasonable Doubt.

But in his own words he dumbed down his lyrics to double his dollars.

While that may be true, it took Hov his 3rd to even start being who we know him as in regards to status and numbers. And even then for many people between RD and Blueprint he was already ranked highly. I agree that more can be done to solidify Kendrick's ranking or boost it, but I guess I'm getting caught up in semantics because I think "potential" is the wrong phrase. A successful independent* album (*don't believe he was unsigned), 3 studio albums and 2 side projects means a rapper has hit his potential.

Listen to "This Can't Be Life."

Jay was older than Pac, Nas, and Big.

No everyone who's a teenager walks in a studio with a notepad and kills illmatic in one take.

Nothing wrong with a late bloomer. Hov was definitely one. Took him since 88 to be a sucess.

I'm not saying anything is wrong with it. I'm a late bloomer overall and have yet to bloom. I'm just saying it's not quite the same as a rapper who's been at the forefront for all of the 2010s and has enough material to know what he is. Kendrick's potential has been fulfilled but more can be accomplished with it.

Hes number 5 to me. And in terms of quality % he's probably at the top. Even his throwaways are good. The only knock I have is sometimes his features aren't that great and also this long hiatus while he's at what should be his peak
